The Very Thought of You, Chapter 17
How do you greet someone you haven’t seen in thirty years without making assumptions about how they feel about seeing you? How do you greet someone you met once and loved in a day without assuming they felt the same way? How do you greet your soulmate and the woman you’ve dreamt of almost everyday or night for the past thirty years without knowing where she’s been or who she’s been with?
We stood and stared several long moments without talking or moving. A smile slowly spread across her face as she held out her arms to me and exclaimed, “Oh my god, T!” I went to them gladly. As she embraced me, I stopped breathing, stopped thinking, stopped caring about anything but her and me. It came rushing back, how her arms had felt like home. Time and distance hadn’t touched the effect she’d had on me as the world fell away. I pulled back reluctantly from an embrace that had gone on a little too long.
There were a few brief moments of uncomfortable silence. We nervously laughed, each looking down at our shoes. When we remade eye contact, she flashed me that thousand-watt grin. Her eyes twinkled with mischief, and she exuded confidence and suavity. She cocked her crooked half smile as she shook her head gently.
“I can’t believe you’re here. What on earth are you doing in this god forsaken town?”
“Visiting.” Where had my ability to speak and think gone?
“God, it’s been-“
“-Thirty years.”
“Yeah…” she breathed, sadness hinted at. “That’s such a long time.”
“I know.”
“Are… are you busy?” She flushed and plowed on, “I mean, of course you are, you just-“
“-Would you like to get coffee or something?” I interjected, taken aback by my own gall, my nerve to dare to ask this magnificent woman in front of me out, sort of.
She beamed, “Sure. I’d love that, T.”
“Great.”
We smiled at each other and started walking down the street. A middle-aged, soccer mom type and a strong, professional, city woman. We immediately fell into step as we had done then, and I longed to take her hand or her arm, anything to gain contact with her, to assure myself that she was real. She seemed to know exactly where she was going, so I followed her lead, directed by her light touches on my arm when we needed to change direction or go around a crowd, sending warm waves up my arm and through my body. Finally, she gently placed her hand on the small of my back, guiding me into a storefront. That one gesture told me all I needed to know, that she was still mine. That we still belonged to each other.

Thirty years and its still there. So why is Henry. Tina, wake up girl, you lost her once, don’t lose a second time.
Oh gosh, can hardly wait for tomorrow to see how Tina ends up dressing and where Bette takes her and what they end up doing for the rest of the evening. Gosh, hope Bette is not with anyone and that Tina comes to her senses and leaves Henry in the dust.
yes!!! NY, I just read your 2 last chapters and you left me WOW… yes, wow, I was like ‘no way!!!!!!!’ Yes, imagine a 20 yesarsd old girl on the verge of making a happy dance in a lanhouse(is that how they are called? my girl calls them like that, but I never know…) AAAAAAAAAAANYWAY… PLEASE!!!! I’ll kneel down if I have to, please post soon!!!
and I totally agree with coop here, go get her, T!!!
So thirty years later and Tina’s ready to make a move? Yeah right!!! BTW NY, unless there is a new meaning for the term “white bread” I’m surprised you used it. It such a racist and derogatory word.
Leave Henry napping and go get your woman. After dont waste another minute. thanks
I don’t have time to read just yet, but will take you up on the Valentine offer. Single lesbians for the win!
“You never know how slow the moments go till I’m near to you I see your face in every flower Your eyes in stars above Its just the thought of youthe very thought of you my love” I love it NY! You know I really hope Tina has guts to grab what she wants and run like hell! Post Soon!
Right, after decades of living a life of secondary happiness in suburbia, Tina seems to be taking a leap. She’s dressing to impress and trying to leave her dissatisfied haus-frau persona behind. I hope she can, this time, for her own sake as well as for Bette’s. I actually see light at the end of the tunnel… Another great chapter… and by the way, NY, please don’t ever refer to your story as “little scribblings”… your writing is so much greater than that. I think it’s fabulous, so don’t belittle it. Thanks for the chapter.
Sensible shoes. So gay. xD Wow so Tina isn’t just going somewhere with Bette. She’s going OUT with Bette. Uh huh, Tina, you better go because it’s your freakin’ birthday! And I just realized how lame that sounded. I give up. *dies*
NY, I am glad that I could give you a laugh by yelling at your Tina. So here it goes again….Tina if you let Bette go again I will somehow get into this story and personally slap you silly. Some people don’t get a first chance with there soulmate let alone a second. Please NY I beg of you please don’t let Tina be stupid twice with the same love of her life. I hope the “surprise” snow storm clears up very soon. You really need to get some sleep my friend. Talk soon!
Hey NY! Still following this wonderfully written story. So they finally find each other again! YAY! Now we will get to see what the beautiful Bette Porter has been up to all these years. I sure hope Tina is tired of playing it ‘safe’ and ready to follow her heart. It’s never too late to find your happiness, right? Go out there and get it girls!
You know, i so get what you wrote about Tina knowing Bette was still hers from that little gesture- the hand on the small of her back. I had that sorta moment too once and thought i was being silly to read too much into it, so i was really surprised when you described the very same gesture! anyway, about the chapter- i like how you infused a bit of humour towards the end. No bitter after-taste! yey! Loved this, NY, looking forward to more. Oh and babe? totally hear ya about the Valentine thing :D
such a beautiful story. thank you..
NYG pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeee keep i coming. You keep teasing me lets get to the good stuff already, girl. LoL
Trust me when I tell you, it is a joy to be here. Tina is ready to take charge (maybe) – could it be Alpha Tina? Could it? LOL…You know I love Alpha Tina…. and that personae sure would be a change for her in this story. I can’t wait to find out if this is what they’ve been waiting 30 years for. You write with such grace and elegance, NY… thank you.
Yes, Tina… GO.GET.BETTE!!!… Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!!!!
“Finally, she gently placed her hand on the small of my back, guiding me into a storefront. That one gesture told me all I needed to know, that she was still mine. That we still belonged to each other.”… Priceless! NYGL, this story is like nothing we ever had!… A lifetime story! The feelings and emotions you’re putting out there are exceptionnal!… Most of those feelings I’m sure most of us can identify with… Can’t wait to see where you’re taking them! Thanks a lot!
Ahhhhhhhhhhh, thats all… just ahhhhhhh
Noo Yawk…Where have you’ve been hiding? I am so glad that you decided to write b/c you definitely have a talent. Your writing stands up to the best of them. And that can be proven by the best of them commenting on your story. PPS. So you like Jodi?
I’ve been a silent reader…mostly because I just happen to stimble upon the story and I’ve been reading them back-to-back to catch up. Now that I am it’s darned hard to have to wait 24hrs for a new one BUT, you’re worth it! :) I love your wit and writing style…hope you stick around for a while…you’re now one of my fave authors…and that list is VERY short
Another amazing job babe. Every time I click on a chapter, I prepare myself to be swept away…I loved that they were walking down the street together to get to the cafe and the little touches/brushing against each other…sooooromantic and I savoured the hug at the end just as much as they did I think! This was beautiful! I’m beginning to sound like a broken record aren’t i? :) And now moving on to the next!
