The Thawing of the Ice – Chapter Five
Tina had been running from Bette.
Running from the draining emotional baggage tied to the woman her daughter favored beyond reason.
Running from working through their problems and from her fears that she’d made a mistake in choosing Bette.
Tina had given her heart to Bette. She’d given her body. She’d put a hold on her career and devoted her existence to the family they wanted. And then Tina had been betrayed.
Bette was the only reason Tina had dared venture into the land of women loving women.
Sure she’d had crushes in high school and college. And she’d kissed a girl here and there.
But she’d never been in a relationship with one. She’d never shared her body with one.
And then came Bette.
The dark eyes that seemed to smile and undress her at the same time.
The heated touch that made her skin tingle and the juncture between her hips throb.
Bette had been special and significant and worth giving up the heterosexual paradigm.
Bette was worth the scorn of her family.
Bette was worth the ridicule of her former friends.
Tina had given up her world to be with Bette and then Bette took away the one thing that made Tina’s sacrifices worthwhile.
Bette Porter had taken herself out of their relationship.
She’d given her body to someone else.
And that broke something within Tina.
Tina had been lonely, scared, and desperate when she agreed that she and Bette should start over again after their separation. She wanted the safety and security of Bette, but she was still angry and she still didn’t trust her.
And that part of her that was already broken, continued to fracture.
The complete break didn’t come at once. It happened with tiny fissures that bore new fissures until the part of Tina that wanted the beautiful brunette was no longer recognizable. And without a need for Bette, Tina did not understand how she could not need a man.
Bette was an abnormality. Not a standard.

wow that was a great perspective on Tina’s mentality. I so hated her passive aggressive bs on the show. It was obvious that she still had very strong feelings for Bette.
This chapter left me hopeful. This is a great story, mts, thanks! :)
This is a great written story. I’m viewing Tina like an ostrich removing her head from the sand. And for the record, I’m putting this in a nice way ;)
Good to see Tina’s perspective on what happened. It looks like they are both coming out of hibernation!
But the fire in Bette Porter had returned. And with it, the thawing of the ice. Great lines! PPS!!
kbergin – couldn’t agree more!! the last two sentences really made me smile…who can resist a fiery Bette Porter?!
Great Chapter!!! I just hope Tina stay’s away from Bette for the time being. Thank you PPS
We all know that Tina is using Henry. That is sad, she threw herself at him,so he thinks he has forever with her. Thankgoodness Bette is our alpha again, and that she loved Angie enough to let hergo, and not become a batting rod for her and Tina thanks
Bravo! Love your journey into Tina’s psyche. It’s as good or even the best explanation of her M.O. as I’ve seen. There are attractions that you choose, like Henry and there are loves that just are, like Bette. Compared to your perspective on Tina, my comment is inadequate to the task. Thanks.
This was really, really good! Insightful!
I think that was one of the best explanation, or perspectives of why Tina acted the way she did…why she said the things she did that I have seen on this site. Simply put, incredible talent. Thank you for sharing it with us.
This is a really perceptive treatment of Tina’s point of view. Really enjoying this story.
Simply powerful writing, phrasing and captured emotions. I for one, am a Tina fan. So, to read her thoughts through your “pen”, brings to life the struggle she was going thru…good or bad…it is still a struggle. Well captured! One of the best stories of 2010!!
Tina’s ice is thawing but Bette’s big wall of steel is building. What will happen next is something that I will look forward to. I want to see them sit down, talk and really listen to each other for the sake of their daughter who needs both of her moms. I love this story. I need a fix of your brilliant writing each day. Thanks!
Well done!
It was great to see Tinas perspective on past events. Thanks for the update.
This is so spot on! Thanks for elucidating for us the bafflement that was season 3 tina. I still believe that Tina Kennard isn’t capable of all that cruelty, but well, season 3 happened, and we need an explanation that would make sense.
Excellent update and insight into Tina’s thinking. Love this story and your take on it. Thank you again.
Hey there, just wanted to pop in and say what a joy this is to read. Tough subject, the moment in time in the show, but you’ve hooked me!
Tina is a passive aggressive beotch. She still wants Bette especially now that Bette is fiery once again. She doesn’t want Bette to move on. She’s kind of crazy. Great writing. Thanks for frequent posts.
I love that last line!
Oh my goodness! I am so glad you are back. This is one hell of a story. Thank you so much for posting.
YES…this is a great story that offers insight into Bette and Tina’s thought processes. I love it. You are one of the best writers on this site and I’m glad your back with a new twist on Bette and Tina’s life
Hey MTS, Wonderful insight into the workings of Tina’s head at this time.I do think much of her and Bette’s break-up was due to Post Natal Depression.Another aspect was losing the person you fell in love with.In this case both Bette and Tina lost sight of who they were. This return to their nature behaviours and attitudes is most welcome.Bette was always the strong, intense and passionate woman who swept Tina off her feet.Tina was the perfect balance between homemaker, carer and career woman who provided a safe and loving home.I just hope that they can now rebuild their friendship and be the best parents for Angelica.More please as this torment is tearing me apart.Just fabulously written. So true to life. Many thanks from Your Loyal Fan.
MTS I am loving this story and look forward to every new post. I think you are spot on in your perspective and insight into these two women. Thank you for your portrayal of Bette as someone with depth and character and not just the woman that cheated on Tina and was made to pay with her life for a lifetime. I like that you are delving into the Tina character because she has always been challenging. From my perspective she’s self-serving, unforgiving, and vengeful. She uses anything and anyone that serves her purpose. S3 Tina was not an anamoly she was just showing her true colors as we saw many of these character traits throughout the six seasons. I feel for Angie but it’s obvious that Bette is the better parent by just the fact that she’s willing to put the child’s well-being before her own happiness. For Tina Angie has only ever been a lure to either get Bette or punish her. I’m not surprised that the ice is thawing now that she sees Bette is returning to the strong, passionate woman. It’s only when Bette is thriving or when Tina needs her for sex, financial support or to use as a punching bag that Tina finds her appealing. I hope Bette stands her ground. PPS
This makes so much sense. I love Tina but got so frustrated with the lack of explanation regarding her feelings toward Bette that were never really resolved and the return to the relative “ease” of heterosexuality.
