The Thawing of the Ice – Chapter Five

    "Everything okay?" asked Henry.

Tina jumped, her heart now pounding in her throat. "Shit!" she hissed, turning toward him as he stood in the doorway, her hand now protectively on her chest.

"Sorry", he replied, his sleepy gaze deeply apologetic.

Tina couldn’t help but roll her eyes and she sighed. "Everything’s fine."

"You’re getting in kind of late," he said, his brown eyes curious, his tone inquisitive but cautious.

Tina smoothed the many strands of her errant blonde hair, the ponytail holder hanging loosely at the back of her head. "Yeah, sorry about that. She just….she got me so pissed off. I needed to cool down. I didn’t want to bring that home to you."

Henry gave a soft smile. "Tina, you know you can be angry with me. That’s what I’m here for."

She nodded. "I know. Thanks for watching Angie. How was she?"

Henry’s soft smile grew wide. "She was great. Such a sweet kid. I kind of missed out a lot when Mikey was her age. It’s kind of fun just hanging out with her. She’s so smart. She had a great night."

    "Well, thanks again."

Henry shook his head. "Don’t thank me. She’s going to be my daughter, too, right? It’s like I’m already her dad. There’s no need to thank me."

Tina gazed at him, paralyzed by the weight of his words. Her father? When did he become her father? And though Tina had many reservations about Henry’s intentions toward her daughter, she held her tongue. Her mind was a mess and her memory was hazy.

She floated through her bedtime ministrations and waited until Henry was softly snoring beside her before she began to replay the last few months in her head.

Henry’s assertion that he was almost Angelica’s father was not out of line with the precedent Tina had been setting with him all along. She’d wanted an escape from Bette. From lesbian drama. From anything "other" and Henry was strong, stable, and straight. He had been her way out. Tina had given him every indication that she was done experimenting with women and that she was ready to settle down and have a normal family life with the man of her dreams.

    1. wow that was a great perspective on Tina’s mentality. I so hated her passive aggressive bs on the show. It was obvious that she still had very strong feelings for Bette.

    2. This is a great written story. I’m viewing Tina like an ostrich removing her head from the sand. And for the record, I’m putting this in a nice way ;)

    3. We all know that Tina is using Henry. That is sad, she threw herself at him,so he thinks he has forever with her. Thankgoodness Bette is our alpha again, and that she loved Angie enough to let hergo, and not become a batting rod for her and Tina thanks

    4. Bravo! Love your journey into Tina’s psyche. It’s as good or even the best explanation of her M.O. as I’ve seen. There are attractions that you choose, like Henry and there are loves that just are, like Bette. Compared to your perspective on Tina, my comment is inadequate to the task. Thanks.

    5. I think that was one of the best explanation, or perspectives of why Tina acted the way she did…why she said the things she did that I have seen on this site. Simply put, incredible talent. Thank you for sharing it with us.

    6. Simply powerful writing, phrasing and captured emotions. I for one, am a Tina fan. So, to read her thoughts through your “pen”, brings to life the struggle she was going thru…good or bad…it is still a struggle. Well captured! One of the best stories of 2010!!

    7. Tina’s ice is thawing but Bette’s big wall of steel is building. What will happen next is something that I will look forward to. I want to see them sit down, talk and really listen to each other for the sake of their daughter who needs both of her moms. I love this story. I need a fix of your brilliant writing each day. Thanks!

    8. This is so spot on! Thanks for elucidating for us the bafflement that was season 3 tina. I still believe that Tina Kennard isn’t capable of all that cruelty, but well, season 3 happened, and we need an explanation that would make sense.

    9. Tina is a passive aggressive beotch. She still wants Bette especially now that Bette is fiery once again. She doesn’t want Bette to move on. She’s kind of crazy. Great writing. Thanks for frequent posts.

    10. YES…this is a great story that offers insight into Bette and Tina’s thought processes. I love it. You are one of the best writers on this site and I’m glad your back with a new twist on Bette and Tina’s life

    11. Hey MTS, Wonderful insight into the workings of Tina’s head at this time.I do think much of her and Bette’s break-up was due to Post Natal Depression.Another aspect was losing the person you fell in love with.In this case both Bette and Tina lost sight of who they were. This return to their nature behaviours and attitudes is most welcome.Bette was always the strong, intense and passionate woman who swept Tina off her feet.Tina was the perfect balance between homemaker, carer and career woman who provided a safe and loving home.I just hope that they can now rebuild their friendship and be the best parents for Angelica.More please as this torment is tearing me apart.Just fabulously written. So true to life. Many thanks from Your Loyal Fan.

    12. MTS I am loving this story and look forward to every new post. I think you are spot on in your perspective and insight into these two women. Thank you for your portrayal of Bette as someone with depth and character and not just the woman that cheated on Tina and was made to pay with her life for a lifetime. I like that you are delving into the Tina character because she has always been challenging. From my perspective she’s self-serving, unforgiving, and vengeful. She uses anything and anyone that serves her purpose. S3 Tina was not an anamoly she was just showing her true colors as we saw many of these character traits throughout the six seasons. I feel for Angie but it’s obvious that Bette is the better parent by just the fact that she’s willing to put the child’s well-being before her own happiness. For Tina Angie has only ever been a lure to either get Bette or punish her. I’m not surprised that the ice is thawing now that she sees Bette is returning to the strong, passionate woman. It’s only when Bette is thriving or when Tina needs her for sex, financial support or to use as a punching bag that Tina finds her appealing. I hope Bette stands her ground. PPS

    13. This makes so much sense. I love Tina but got so frustrated with the lack of explanation regarding her feelings toward Bette that were never really resolved and the return to the relative “ease” of heterosexuality.
