    Author Notes:

    Bette goes over some class assignments, and she gets a call from Tina. A long conversation gives way to another step forward.

    She had to call Bette.

    After trying her home phone, she dialled the number Bette had just recently given her – the cell phone she said she rarely used. Tina was glad to hear the soothing voice on the other end, as uncertain as Bette’s often sounded.

    “Hello?”

    “It’s me,” Tina said quietly, laying back with a hand raised to her forehead in exhaustion. “I’m sorry for calling … if you’re busy, you know.”

    “No,” Bette insisted, holding a hand out to Shane as she turned her head. “Are you alright?”

    Tina smiled. “I am now.”

    “So, my voice cures all of your sorrows, does it?” Bette teased, standing up from the couch to make her way down the narrow hall. She smiled when Shane raised a brow at the tone of her voice, also hearing Tina’s giggling on the other end. “That’s good to hear.”

    “I guess … I wanted to be honest with you.”

    Bette stopped and turned, curious. She closed her eyes when Shane’s interest was distracting her. “Please. You know how much I value honesty.”

    “Yes … I do,” Tina answered with certainty, chewing on her lip. “I … wanted you to know that I’m sorry. I’ve been … holding back, and I’m sorry.”

    “Holding back?”

    “On my assignments.”

    Bette let a deep breath out, bending at the hip. Thoughts of infidelity or even plagiarism were pushing their way into her subconscious. Tina’s confession had related to the least of her concerns, and she was glad for it. “Jesus, you scared me.”

    “Sorry,” Tina smiled innocently, wiggling her toes as she laid on her back with both knees together. “I didn’t mean to. I just … well, I feel like there’s nothing to hide from you. I … don’t want to. I want you to know everything about me.”

    Bette smiled in earnest, tracing her fingers along a rough patch on the wall. “That sounds beautiful, Tina.” She tried to be quiet so that Shane wouldn’t hear. “I’d like that.”

    Tina had been relieved as well – she thought Bette would be enraged. “You’re … not mad at me?”

    “Can we talk a little more about it later? I’m … not exactly at home at the moment.”

    “Oh, right,” Tina blushed, turning onto her side to imagine where Bette was and what she was doing. She wanted to hold her. “Okay. We can talk later then.”
