The Other Side of the Game Part 4

Mikela: You know, Ive been thinking of doing some volunteering.

    Candace: Really? What type?

Mikela: Something with kids or maybe the elderly. Im not sure yet. She pauses to take a sip from her drink. Nisa has been working with a childrens outreach group through the church.

Candace: At the mention of church its Candaces turn to be sarcastic. Well, good for her.

Before Mikela can continue their discussion the waiter brings their food. All conversation ceases as both begin to eat their meals. After ten minutes of silence Mikela decides to continue the topic of volunteering.

Mikela: Like I was saying earlier. Nisa is always talking about this outreach program and how rewarding the work is. She stops to gage Candaces mood before continuing. So I was thinking that maybe, we could volunteer with the program.

Candace knew Mikela was going to make this suggestion just as well as Mikela knew what Candaces response will be.

    Candace: No.

    Mikela: But Can

    Candace: No.

    Mikela: Why not?

Candace: Are you serious? You know why not.

Mikela: Oh, come on. Look I know you have issues with the church…

Candace: Issues? No it is not me who has issues with the church; rather the church has issues with me- and you, for that matter. Especially your familys church.

Mikela: Look Candace, I know that my familys church is not the most ***** and ***** friendly place you have ever been too, but

    Candace: But what?

Mikela: Becoming annoyed by Candace continually cutting her off, But, its an old fashion Methodist church. I mean what do you expect? There will be a ***** and ***** welcoming committee. Besides, Im not talking about joining the choir. Im talking about volunteering through one of the churchs programs.

Candace: Yeah right. Just volunteering, huh? Well how long do you think it will be before those members will invite us to one of those bible studies, kind of like the last one we went to, which turned into a 2 hour come-to-Jesus-and-stop-your-filthy-homosoexual-ways-before-you-burn-in-***** seminar.

Mikela says nothing to this because she knows Candace is right. She can still remember how angry Candace was and how she swore ***** would freeze over before she ever set one foot into that church again.
