The Newly Discovered SoCal Humminger Bette Porterius ~ Chapter 15

Bette noted to thank Alice later. “I am even more delighted that you could join us,” she addressed Eric but turned her head as she spoke in order to include Tina in what she was saying.  “There are a great number of interesting people here tonight and the caterer is one that I have used before with great success.  I think you will enjoy your time here.”

“I’m sure we will,” Tina replied, a bit too eagerly and immediately chastised herself for behaving like someone with a girlcrush.  As, she knew her behavior confirmed, she really was.

Bette noticed the eager voice and her smile broadened.  “Almost all of the guests are artists or those who, for one reason or another, no longer work.  I very much appreciate how difficult it is for those with more traditional occupations to be free on a weekday evening.  A long meandering route to say that I am honored that you are here.”

Bette caught Alice’s eye roll, which neither Eric nor Tina could see.

Eric began to reply, but Tina spoke first, “A schedule can always be adjusted.”

Bette continued to smile at Tina, her smile getting broader as each second passed.

“I have to go back to the office later.”

Bette turned to Eric, annoyed that he had interrupted her happy fest with his girlfriend.  “Then I am even more honored that you could come.”

“Oh, he is thrilled to be here, aren’t you, honey.”

Bette’s happy fest abruptly ended with the endearment.

Alice saw the saw the brief disappointed expression and changed the subject by teasing Bette, “We were looking at Opie’s photo over there and began to discuss tattoos.  I thought everyone today had one, whether they would admit it or not.  What do you think, Bette?”

Bette recognized Alice’s teasing but she was not going to admit to the very small symbol that graced a somewhat intimate spot of her body.  It had been a college folly, inspired by her first love. “I don’t know, Alice.  I think it takes a confluence of person, state of mind and time.”

“Alice doesn’t believe that I don’t have any,” Eric explained.

“Actually, I do believe you.” Alice dismissively replied.

“He’s always been an establishment lawyer at heart,” Tina interjected.  “He used a briefcase as his lunch box.” Tina turned to her boyfriend.  “Just kidding, honey.”

    1. Pancha’s stories are some of those that I re-read every few months, cos they were that damned good. Your stories, Spumoni, are ones that I re-read because they’re that damned good. Different writers, different stories, but definitely the same level of quality. You’ve been in my favorite authors list since I first read you, and that’s not going to change, Spumoni. Like, *ever*. Now then, on to this installment: I want to see how much longer Bette’s patience holds out with the lawyer… maybe Alice can like, play on his paranoia til he goes back to the office. As for Tina… her girlcrush must be starting to evolve, I think. I hope she talks to Bronwyn about those implications and complicating factors soon. Great chapter, I look forward to more of the dinner. Thanks Spumoni! :)

    2. Yes, I love all this intrigue and I love the idea of the girlcrush that Tina has sold herself. I also miss Pancha and am grateful you have come to us with this wonderfully well-written story. Hmmmm (humming)

    3. Hi, dear sweet Spumoni! *waving* Let the fireworks begin! All the pent up feelings, the inner thoughts, eagerness on the comments; all of them were just wonderful, dearest friend. Bette’s disdain to everything that Eric said or remarked, was hilarious. Alice was very accute on her interventions. Yep. Bette should thank her for doing such a great job with Tina and Eric. Ah, goose bumps and electricity running on both B&T’s hands and bodies are described beautifully. We truly enjoyed reading this update, sweetie. Thanks for being so generous. PPS Hugs & kisses on both your cheeks.- Lucero & Marsha (Proud Salsa Aunties to the loving JC, Eunichick, ZLFAN, T_Daze, Melrose231 and Tias Adoradas to Patpez)

    4. Well Spumoni…you may think this is plodding, but I think it’s building the tension between them. One doesn’t think that they are hetero for their whole lif and in one meeting jump into the arms of a lesbian (even Bette Porter). This is very sexy the way you are building the emotion bit by bit. Can’t wait for your next post!

    5. Pancha’s “Is this Love” is indeed a classic, as are most of her later works. RIP Pancha. Spumoni, I put you in a similar league as Pancha. Your wolves story is sheer genius. I am enjoying the pace of this one too.

    6. Oh yes…the power of a hand-shake! Ah-hah!!!! Nice build up in tension! I’ll go check Pancha’s story…but only becuase I’m waiting for your next update. :)

    7. don’t sell yourself short…your stories are absolutely wonderful…this chapter is another delight…did i miss bette’s humming? have to read it again :)

    8. They speak! And a ‘personal’ tour of the gallery has begun. Well, too bad for Porter (not!) that she can’t slink back to her office just yet. We’ll all just have to learn to deal with our collective goose bumps. While I recommend that everyone read ALL of Pancha’s stories because every last one of them was terrific (and as great a writer as she was, she was an even better person. I miss her every day.), I would say the same about you, which is why you’re one of the few I still read around here anymore. And why, like fortlw, I remember the wolf pack (both the two and four legged members) and wish they’d come trotting this way again. Oh, and Bette does owe Alice thanks, even if Alice’s efforts were mainly for her own amusement.

    9. Wait, was that some kind of secret lesbian handshake like the Free Masons have? Why didn’t anybody tell me? How does it go again? No finger pulling involved, I hope.

    10. However, the two of them had never discussed the implications of having a girlcrush on a lesbian. Tina sensed that that was definitely a complicating factor and that she needed to talk to Bronwyn at her first opportunity….. do you sense that Tina? you might just want to ‘text’ Bronwyn ‘honey.’

    11. Spumoni, the wit and pace of YOUR story led me to recall Pancha’s “What is Love.” I love this story. Take your time, “plod” (your term) if you like. I am happy lingering in the le salon de la Bette Porter. Yes, Pancha was a very good writer. You are in my favorites as well. Thank you.

    12. My brother made his childhood toolbox into a briefcase when he was eight years old, as well. Eric is a tool, and a dull one at that. I guess Bette and Tina will be in a full embrace before he is aware of what’s going on. I love seeing Bette’s characteristic confidence undone by her attraction to Tina. Alice is making lots of points (talking and otherwise) with Bette. Bette owes her big time! Thanks!
