    Chapter 17

    Bette tossed the boots on the floor and crawled back up the bed and faced Tina kissing her briefly “Tee you didn’t have to do all that”

    “Yes I did” Tina replied softly but matter of factly, they both understood that if left to Bette the likely scenario would have included a bin bag and being left out with the trash.

    “Thank you” Bette said softly, knowing Tina understood that expression of gratitude was not just for what she had accomplished this morning, but for knowing exactly how to love her without being told, for knowing Bette’s needs before Bette knew herself, for being the only one throughout her life who had never let her down unlike her pathetic excuse for a family.

    “I hope you ordered a headstone big enough to fit here lies a fuckinglyingselfishsonofabitchwankingbastard” She continued failing to mask the bitterness in her tone.

    “Bette” Tina began to chastise then on second thoughts totally agreed with Bette’s choice words “Maybe I should have ordered a bigger one” She smiled, before a yawn took over her facial expression. She snuggled closer to Bette unable to keep her eyes open a moment longer.

    Across town Melvin’s sister, Patty took a another sip of her afternoon Sherry, saddened by the news of her brothers demise, she still had one last call to make, only this one she had no idea how the news would be received, more than likely with indifference but it was still a call she felt compelled to place.

    “Kit, phone” Kit’s husband called for the third time.

    “I’m coming” Kit said as she came down the stairs “Who is it” she asked

    “I don’t know” he replied handing Kit the phone “I have to go” he said quickly kissing Kits cheek.

    “Hello” Kit said given her husband a wave as he left.

    “Catherine, it’s Patty”

    Kit’s heart skipped a beat, Aunt Patty was the only family member she had kept in touch with since leaving home after her mothers death. Her aunt had shown her nothing but compassion during the period of her teenage pregnancy when her parents had sent her to stay there until she delivered, for that she would always be grateful. Their correspondence had been sporadic and included what little news her aunt could glean from Melvin on Elizabeth’s well being.

    7. My dear Skimmy, I loved the chapter. It’s nice to know that Kit and Maxine didn’t completely give up on Bette, and that Kit’s thinking of Bette’s well-being when she refuses to contact her. After all, if Bette hadn’t checked Melvin’s study, she would have never known and it would have been hard to hear the whole thing from Kit. I hope aunt Patty lets Kit know that Bette knows. I’m sure Kit will step up to the plate then. Also, I know I owe you a reply and some thanks, but I’ve been swamped. Thanks, buddy!
