    The Box – Chapter 5

    Chapter 5

One by one the ornaments are removed from their new home and are hung on the tree. Each has a special place in our hearts and in our memories. The next one that triggers a story is a crystal star. It was from our first Christmas after we reconciled and we found it while in New York to attend a movie premiere just before the holidays.

    New York…many years ago……..

“Bette, come on we are going to be late.”

“I’m coming T. What’s the rush…..these things never start on time.”

“I know, but that doesn’t mean that we have to be late. Now can we please go?”

We make our way down to the lobby of our hotel and out to the waiting car. Tina looks amazing. Of course she always looks amazing, but tonight there is something extra special. I can’t put my finger on it, but there’s just something there. This is a big deal for her. She fought hard for this movie and I am so proud of her for seeing it through and making it happen. Angie is not with us on this trip and I miss her terribly, as does Tina.

Arriving at the theatre for the premiere she needs to do some promo work, and I just take a back seat and stand in the background watching her work the room. I am so proud of her. There is a small jewelry store next door to the theater so I wander down there to peek in the window. It is then that I see it. The crystal star. I know that Tina will love it.
I walk over to the door, and reach for the handle. I pull on the door to open it, only to find that it is locked. Looking at the sign showing the hours of operation, I discover that they are closed for the day and open again in the morning at 9:00AM. We have an early flight back to LA scheduled so I take down the name of the store and will call them and ask them to save the ornament for me and have it shipped to LA.

Making my way back toward the theatre I find Tina waiting for me.

    3. Awww Tazzie! This story is such a joy to read. Thanks for bringing such good feelings during the holidays season. PPS Hugs & kisses on both your cheeks. Lucero & Marsha (Proud Salsa Aunties to the ever loving JC and Eunichick)

    4. I’m SO excited with this story. Not too many people can pull off flashbacks, but you have done it wonderfully. They help to reinforce the special bond that Bette and Tina share in the “present” Christmas. You have built a foundation of symbolism behind the ornament. I see this pattern in many of your stories, and it’s simply awesome. Never stop writing my friend. xo

    5. This story is perfect for Christmas..we look at our ornaments every year and remember when we got them. This year our daughter pulled out her macaroni star she made in Kindergarten and asked why we still had it…if she only knew how special it is to us. Thanks for this story and have a wonderful holiday. pps

    6. Good golly Tazzie you sure are bringing back lots of memories with this story. All those little plastic ornaments and the paper ones on yarn strings and the painted plaster with chip in them are the most charished in the collection. Thank you, Md
