The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner Schmidt After Tina (Part 2, Chapter 5)
Patsy said she worked for Procter and Gamble as a sales rep and her girlfriend worked as an executive in a gym chain. Linda appeared to be more comfortable with Patsy near by. She leaned toward us too but in a more subtle way.
A master of ceremonies welcomed everyone from a microphone on the stage. He urged everyone to greet and meet each other.
Patsy pretty much took over our table. She stood up and yelled out to people down the table asking what their names were and proceeded to introduce Linda, Bette and I to them.
At 6:45, the traditional Hawaiian imu ceremony began with the Kalua pig raised from its underground oven by four husky native men in flowered skirts and assorted leis. Of course music accompanied the event as two men carried the pig away with its legs tied to two poles that rested on their shoulders. They jogged off to what must have been the kitchen and a few moments later we were called to the buffet dinner, table by table.
As we went to stand in line Patsy and Linda were ahead of us. Patsy had her arm slung around her girlfriend’s shoulder and no one seemed to think anything of it. I could not help but turn around to whisper to Bette, “Times sure have changed since 1985. Remember what happened to us in that Napa Valley winery?”
Bette nodded. She had leaned over and kissed me on the mouth in front of people in the wine cellar and there were rude comments around the room to the point where I ran out in tears. Then we were harassed in the parking lot. We were both very upset. Now, more and more it was acceptable and almost as if to emphasize the fact, while Patsy and Linda were face to face, Patsy stole a quick kiss. I glanced at the others standing in four lines and it did not seem to phase them one iota. I thanked God that culture and society were finally catching up.
I glanced at Bette and figured she was pretty much thinking the same thing I was.
The food tables were spread out in a cornucopia of fine island fare. There were traditional Hawaiian foods such as the pork, lomi-lomi salmon, haupia and that dreadful poi that tastes like wallpaper paste looks. There were tropical fruit and fresh vegetable platters, as well as Teriyaki steak, ginger chicken and grilled fish. The appetizers, the entrees, the desserts, were just so delightfully presented that it looked like the perfect setting for a food orgy.

Before I give my comment I just read what Bette’s Babe said about Patsy and Linda. I didn’t noticed before but she is right they are the young S and B. I find your story fascinating maybe that isn’t the correct word for it but it keeps me think on what will happen next or what they are feeling. That’s why this update made me wonder how angry S much feel towards Tina. She knows Bette has her faults but then again she sees the hurt of not letting Angie near Bette is destroying her. She must feel helpless and angry at the same time. I wonder if there will be a time in your story that S will talk to Tina.
Two new posts! Great! Too bad that Tina’s call was not more positive for Bette. But I guess it was to be expected…after all she took Angelica away…Can’t wait to see Bette and Sissy back together. Thanks for posting!
I’ve always loved Tina, but when she treated Bette so bad it was hard to like her. Hope Sissee can make things better.
Another good chapter to read here, Sissee, I agree with kb about T treating B badly, and really rooting for Sissee to make B feeling better. This time you introduced two new characters – Patsy and Linda. I would like to ask you this, Sissee, am I right if I said the purpose of the new characters was to bring about younger version of S & B to the picture, that is, to point out the societal changes of view with regard to same sex relationship?
My dear readers, Please forgive all my typos above. It’s late and I am coming down from several drinks tonight. I best get to bed before I embarrass myself even more. Nite, nite.
kbergin47, I know we all struggled with Laurel’s character in the 2006 season. That’s why I ran with this theme. I know we have loyal Tina fans here so I ask them to forgive me in advance for what is about to happen to Bette and Sissee.
September, I very much like your choice of the “fascinating” word to describe my story. Thank you for that. As for your question of whether or not Sissee will ever talk to Tina, the answer is, abolutely. I hope you’ll still be with us when that happens.
Bette’s Babe, I like your thinking I brought in two new characters to show how times have changed. I wash I had been that clever when I wrote it in 2006. But the truth is, I was with a friend at just such a luau and these characters did exist there. You might say, I ran with it and gave them a life beyond the luau.
brouhaha, I’ve had a very busy two days because of the holiday so I am sorry to be behind in my comments. Yes, you saw two posts because I try to post a new chapter per 300 hits but I see I wasn’t around for that this time. I will post the next chapter tomorrow. Meanwhile, thanks for your comment. You haven’t posted for a while so it’s good to “see” you.
