    PART FOUR: MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN

    Chapter 5

    Chuck and Melissa glanced back and forth at us after we told them we were gay and that Bette was interested in having a baby.

    Finally, Melissa spoke up, “This is a lot to digest. I mean, is that why you came here, out of the blue? To tell us you were gay?”

    “That’s part of it,” I said. “I need to tell my whole family. My kids know but my siblings don’t and neither of course do my parents.”

    “What about Bette’s side?”

    “My father died last year, but he knew it and so does my mom. They’ve known ever since I graduated from Yale.”

    “And they’re okay with it?”

    “Daddy found it difficult to accept but my mom understood. She’s been wonderful about it and she adores Sissee.”

    “And your colleagues?” asked Chuck.

    “You’d be surprised whose gay and whose not but those who aren’t seem to mind their own business.”

    “Well, I just want you to know that you’re still my favorite sister-in-law,” said Melissa, looking at me. “If you’re looking for acceptance, or approval, or understanding, then you have my support. We’ve always enjoyed your company up in Phillips and will always remember how good you’ve been to us when we’d visit you and your family in California. Hey! You’re the same person now as you were then so my affection for you is still there. Nothing’s changed as far as I‘m concerned.”

    My shoulders visibly slumped down with relief. I got out of my chair and went to hug her. Then I stood over my brother with anticipation while Melissa got up and hugged Bette, saying, “Welcome to the family.”

    Chuck did not get up. He kept blinking as if he was filing thoughts into a database in his mind, trying to keep things in order. He looked up at me and said, “I really and truly am in shock. I am totally amazed. I’m trying to think back for a clue and wondering how I could have missed it. If you needed me, right at this moment for anything, I would be here for you but just give me some time to process this. I can’t react, like Melissa. I need time for it to settle in.“

    1. My first question was going to be “Is there really a Safe House restaurant in Milwaukee, because it sounds freakin’ awesome?”, but Bette’s Babe beat me to it. Hope dinner goes as well as their afternoon with maybe a little baby talk thrown in. Great chapter Sis!

    2. K, I was in Milwaukee last year in November when we had tickets to a Green Bay Packers game in Green Bay. I wish I had known about The Safe House then but I didn’t. We had quite an adventure ourselves when we attempted to fly back to California and it snowed so hard the planes were grounded. We had to spend another night in a hotel wbich the airlines paid for. It was kind of neat really. We almost didnt get off the ground the next day either, having to wait in the plane for some time.

    3. Wisconsin is a tourist dream city(smile)..lots of sightseeing..nice update, but Chuck’s attitude is not up to par…hope B&S gets their wish for their sperm donor..anxious for the nxt chapter to hear C&M’s reaction

    5. Do they really have a spy restaurant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin? That would be fun to visit if it does exist. Can’t wait to see how Chuck and Melissa would say during the dinner re: B & S. They should know by now what the intention of their trip is and let’s hope Chuck is willing to donate his sperm. Of course there are lots of things to consider before it comes to reality. Please post soon.

    6. Bette’s Babe, Yes there is such a restaurant in Milwaukee. I found it in my research and was intrigued with the concept. You would think there would be a franchise with other suck restaurants around the USA. Nothing succeeds like success. As for the storyline, we shall see what we shall see. Meanwhile, I appreciate your comments.
