The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner Schmidt After Howie (Part 2, Chapter 7)

I leaned forward again. “I’m sorry Bette. It’s just not the place.”

Now she sat back in her chair and I could tell she was suddenly upset with me. I let out a long sigh, knowing that I was blowing it, ruining the mood and I had to stop it before it went any farther.

I stood up and said, “Come with me.”

I went to the nearest railing and looked out at the lights that were turning on in the buildings on shore as our vessel glided through the water. Bette joined me.

No one was within earshot because everyone by now was seated so it gave us at least a modicum of privacy.

Bette moved closer to me and said, “What?”

“I’m sorry,” I told her. “I don’t want to spoil our night. It was just a passing thing but I’m alright now.”

“Come on, Sis. What’s going on? What passing thing?”

“It’s just something I think is still in your eyes…..when you…….”

    “What?”

“Bette, don’t get mad at me.”

    “Tell me.”

“I….I just worry that you might still have feelings for Tina.”

Bette pressed herself closer to me. “Are you kidding me? Is that what this is all about?”

“Sometimes I think I still see something in your eyes, when you talk to her.”

Bette slipped her arm into mine and squeezed it, shaking her head. “You are so wrong about that, so fucking wrong. Tina and I are over and we’re doing the best we can for our daughter’s sake. I thought you understood that.”

“I just know what I see. An ember. A smoldering ember.”

“No, you’re mistaken. You came before Tina, we detoured and now we’re back where we belong. With each other.”

“It’s the detour I’m worried about.”

“Does that mean I should worry about your detour?”

    “No.”

    “Well, don’t think I don’t.”

    “You have no reason to.”

“I have more of a reason to think you’d go back to Howie than you have of me ever going back to Tina.”

    “How can you say that?”

“Tina did it. She went back to men.”

    “Tina was a fool.”

“Exactly Sis, which is why you have nothing to worry about.”

That stopped me dead in my tracks. She squeezed my arm again. We snuggled closer. I glanced at her. She was looking at me smiling. I felt the tension go out of my body as I relaxed.

    1. Sissie the writer, I am so glad that Bette and Sissee talked things out and not letting it buried under the rug. The communication part is cruical for their relationship. When I first read about Sis’s doubt, I was so worried that they would drift apart. Now they shared how they felt about their relationship (a solid one), I have a good feel of great ending between the two of them! :-)

    2. Yes I agree – you continue to write in such a wonderful, flowing way (plus you can actually spell and keep the story in the right tense!!!!. I really like the relationship between these two.

    3. I was just starting to feel confident about their relationship & now Sis is having doubts. It’s to be expected I guess since both have had long term partners. I’m glad Sis brought it up & they talked it thru. Thanks!

    4. Bette’s Babe, Sissee the writer will always have Bette and Sissee the character talk things through because that was a major problem between Bette and Tina. They didn’t know how to talk or else the writer’s wouldn’t let them. We were always left with untied strings dangling unfinished, leaving us to fill in the blanks. I make up for it here.

    5. Jazzluv, I am happy to hear from you, particularly before the next chapter which is all about JAZZZZZZZ. With that moniker, I hope you will enjoy it. Thanks for your kind words. You must be a reader of a lot of fanfic to know the difference. I’m glad you gave my story a chance.

    6. Kbergine47, You always think of something to say and I appreciate your being a loyal reader. I guess it is natural for partners to be concerned about previous loves. I just felt it had to be addressed now and then. I honestly must say that I enjoyed this chapter myself in the rereading of it. I particularly liked the playful slap on Sissee’s butt by Bette. It was kind of like an exclamation mark at the end of her reassurance.

    7. i was so sure this chapter was gonna be the using of “the toys” but i’m so glad you wrote about this sis, it is human nature to sometimes have doubts when you think everything is going too good and you’re so in love, the way you had them talk was good and i love how bette calmed her and then to finish it off with a slap on the arse…loved it! i like fun bette!!

    8. Mushy, Gee, what a nice post. It’s just plain “nice” and I enjoyed reading it. I would have been remiss if I just went along without mentioning their exes from time to time because it really would happen. Sissee doesn’t really HAVE to see Howie, like Bette HAS to see Tina because of the baby exchanges. So there is that constant reminder but you are right, Bette smoothed things out. This couple truly knows how to communicate.

    9. Gummy Bear, Thanks for being here. When I have the time you will get these chapters faster but when they slow down then you know I am busy in the real world.
