    The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner Schmidt After Howie (Part 1, Chapter 9)
    PART ONE: SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

    Chapter 9

    We discussed the possibility of taking Charlie to the Rehab Center at the Orange Grove Community Hospital but the very idea of being confined like that triggered agonizing protests from him. He said he would be scared to death. He begged us not to take him there and promised he would never do drugs again.

    I recalled what Howie said about the washcloth with blood on it. That it was a sign of addiction, not just recreational use. There were not that many alternatives to the structured rehab programs and at first Howie was tough on him about it, reminding him that he should have thought of the consequences before he got involved with drugs. But then I caught him looking at his son in a way I remembered from long ago, probably when Charlie was only three years old. Howie had accidentally shut a door on the poor kid’s pinky and he screamed bloody murder. His dad held him on his lap, trying to console him as the boy sobbed plaintively. I saw the look on Howie’s face then, as if Charlie’s pain was transferred to him and now, so many years later, I saw that same look again.

    Howie began to formulate a plan. He spoke out loud as he tried to work it out, becoming less harsh, more caring and he even choked up a few times.

    It was decided that he would ask for a leave of absence from work and I would call Charlie’s school tomorrow morning to say there was a family emergency, which was the truth, and that Charlie would be gone for a week. Howie wanted them to fly to Wisconsin where his parents live, in Ashland but they would stay at a fishing resort. He promised his son that he would not leave him, that he would stay with him twenty four hours a day, to help him get through withdrawals, until it was completely out of his system. He told him the fishing was best now, in the spring in those fresh water lakes and he even squeezed his hand for added assurance.

    1. A lot has happend when I was away. I have a feeling jodie is trouble well not really jodie but Bette I hope Bette will think twice before doing anything to harm her relationship.

    2. Kbergin47, Sorry I am late in posting. Have been very busy in the real world. Thanks for your comments. Very astute of you to know that there will be more than one reason why Howie and Charlie get away together. Meanwhile we are getting closer to finding out what Bette has been doing.

    5. Well, my guess was correct about kit’s having trouble, I was thinking it would be Kit, or Tina/Angelica problem. Now it is clear, I forgive you (sissie the writer) for not posting any Bette’s news for two consecutive chapters! :-)Yeah, I am happy that Howie found a way to help Charlie, and they would be in another state, that’s also a good news, I can read more of Bette and Sissee (again, this is my assumption only)! Thanks for the chapter, with the explanation of where’s Bette, now we need more something something (and talk) between B & S :-)

    6. I’m so proud of Howie for stepping up to the plate & being the dad that Charlie needs. They both need this time alone together. So Bette’s been with Kit this whole time. It would have taken me a few more guesses to figure that one out. Their little fight seems minuscule now compared to what’s been going on. Great chapter!

    8. Your stories are always more realistic and true to RL than many other fanfic writers. Their lives always seem reasonable but exciting.I love the detail as well which shows skill and effort on your part. Keep it rolling.

    9. BB, Yes, she/’s at Kit’s but we have yet to find out why. Thank you for forgiving me. You will soon be getting more conversational intercourse between Bette and Sissee, as per your hope, as well as another kind of course that is very, very inter.

    10. Gummy Bear, Thanks for your post. You’re so serious this time. Okay, I’ll play. Howie did finally get a grip and no matter what has happened between Howie and Sissee, they have learned that they must stick together as far as the children are concerned. I debated having them hug when she left but I think it was the right thing to do, showing they were still connected because of the children.
