The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner Schmidt After Howie (Part 1, Chapter 8)
PART ONE: SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
Chapter 8
When we walked into Lamppost, Charlie was standing behind the counter. We saw that his manager was pouring tap beer into a frosty glass, at the bar. There were quite a few customers scattered around on the picnic type tables and benches, divided into three open rooms by half-walls draped with silk ivy.
Charlie’s face lit up when he saw us. He said, “Hi pop! Hey mom.“ However, a wave of perplexity crossed his face. No doubt he wondered what we were doing together, as well as what we were doing there at all, but he did not get a chance to ask.
Howie got a grip. He leaned over the counter and in a hushed voice, said, “I’m gonna quietly tell your manager that you have to go home now.”
“What for?” His eyebrows knit into a frown.
Howie began to walk away. Charlie protested saying, “Hey! We’re expecting three Little League teams in here tonight. I can’t go now.”
Howie came back, leaned close to his son and said, “You damn well better do as I say unless you want me to drag your ass otta here.”
He went over to the manager, who greeted him with a friendly handshake , then Howie leaned in to speak to him confidentially.
Charlie looked at me and said, “What’s going on. Mom?”
“We’ll talk about it at home,” I said.
“I can’t go. I can’t just leave my job. He’s the only one here.”
Howie came back and nodded toward the door, saying. “Let’s go.”
Charlie protested again. He seemed, in fact to suddenly panic. He came from around the corner and swept passed both of us, not toward the front door but the opposite way, toward where I knew there was an office.
Howie followed him. I followed Howie. Charlie stopped at the closed office door with his hand on the knob and demanded to know, “What’re following me for?”
Howie held his ground. “What’re you after?”
Charlie looked guilty as hell about something. “My wallet.”
Howie touched the back of Charlie’s Dockers and said, “It’s in your pocket.“
“What’s going on? Can’t I go get something? What’s the big deal?”

that was so intense, admire Howie for taking charge, coz Bette’s behavior just sucks at the moment..Sissee keep them coming baby..can’t get enough of the story..way to good..r we gonna get ne incling of where the hell Bette is?
My dear Gummy Bear, Oh no, please don’t be upset with Bette. Trust me, she has a damn good reason for being MIA. Will we get an inkling in the next chapter as to where she’s been? Yes, I promise you, they do connect.
I love the way u say my pet name..hahaha “Gummy Bear” sounds sexy and sensual (smiling)
Gummy Bear, Are you flirting with me?
Another chapter of Bette MIA? Wow, this is a torture for me, Sissee the writer. I like to read about Bette and Sissee, not so much about S & H. Howie did show he’s a determined cop in this story. Let’s see how he would solve Charlie’s problem.
mayb..won’t u like to find out (smiling)
Powerful writing.PPS.
Where the Fuck is Bette!!!! She’d better be in some car accident or something serious.
I would have flushed the evidence too. Howie is in full cop mode & Charlie is scared as hell. Maybe him seeing his dad like this will shake him up enough to get help. I hope so. Oh, and where the hell is Bette? honda90 is cracking me up. Thanks!
Bette’s Babe, I hear you. I’m sorry but this is the story as it unfolds with trouble on both sides.
azmama, I need you to calm down the supporters here. They are feeling Bette withdrawal. Thank you for your patience.
honda90, Oh come now, you really don’t want Bette in a car accident do you? I assure you it’s a legitimate, bonafide reason. I have to smile. You should all be pretty stoked by the time I get to it. Meanwhile, I am thinking of sending you all to rehab with Charlie.
Kbergin47, Bette will be in the next chapter. I can’t wait to read it myself.
