The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner After Yale (Part 8, Chapter 1)
The thought occurred to me to simply call her in a nonchalant way and tell her that I read the article. I even convinced myself that I could maintain a sensible conversation with her as if I was calling up an old friend with congratulations.
The gallery phone number was in the article so I dialed it.
An unfamiliar woman‘s voice answered by saying, “Edward Hunter Art Gallery. How may I help you?”
“Bette Porter please,” I said.
I heard a ring and then Bette’s voice. She answered, “Bette Porter here.”
“Bette?” I said in a smaller voice than I usually had.
“Yes?”
“This is Sissee.”
There was a silence on her end. At first I was afraid she was going to hang up on me.
“Sissee Gardner,” I added.
“I know who you are,” she said in a low, intimate voice that gave me goose bumps.
“I just read about Chavez in the Post.”
“Yes, it was a nice article.”
“I saw your name.“
“Yes.”
“Congratulations. You were certainly right about him.”
“Thank you.”
“How is his little brother?”
“Jorge is doing very well. He’s getting good grades in school and he’s a really good soccer player.”
“That’s good.“ I swallowed hard, wondering what to say next that would be casual. “And how’s Terry?”
“He’s fine. Still as handsome as ever. He’s asked me about that screenplay you were writing.”
“I finished it but it didn’t seem right to send it to him.”
“Why not?”
“He was your friend; your boss.”
“That shouldn’t stop you. Maybe you could make a million dollars.“
I smiled, saying, “I wish.”
“How are the children?”
I hesitated a moment and then asked, “You knew I had a second one?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“I stay in touch with Alli and April.”
“They never mentioned it.”
“That‘s because I asked them not to.”
“Well, that makes me feel a whole lot better. I thought you totally shut me out.”
“I see them for lunch at least every other month to get updates.”
“Why didn‘t you just pick up the phone and call me?”

kbergin47, Thank you so much for your comments. It sure is nice to have someone like you around. Bette and Sissee have a destiny. It may be Bette and Tina in TLW but this is not TLW. Never lose site of the title here – the Adventures Of……..I promise you many more adventures.
Sissee, I’m willing to bet that you’ll have the same experience, no one will match up to Bette, no matter the gender. Thanks.
techgirl, I am really glad to see your post. Thanks for still being a reader. Sissee the writer knows what you mean about Bette being one of a kind but none of us knows how true that is and will continue to be like Sissee the character knows and feels it day in and day out, until………well, hopefully you will keep reading and find out what their destiny is.
I like this story, and in some ways I feel sorry for Sissee, but in other ways I find her pathetic. Maybe she’ll find happiness in upcoming chapters. I hope so.
Wow Sissee, great chapter! I feel so bad for Sissee, not being able to be with her true love. It will probably be a void that she may never fill. Thanks for filling us in on her life. I love this story, but you already know that. Have a great week!
My dear September, Yes, Bette and Sissee will meet again and actually, Bette is STILL single when you come right down to it. I know what you are saying though. Bette will eventually meet Tina and Sissee will be there to see it happen.
I can’t wait for the next update. I need to know how it goes on! I wonder how they meet again. Will Bette really be singel even after 8 years.
Id18, Thank you for your comment about being tossed over the Sissee character. There’s a whole lot more coming in this story about both Bette and Sissee’s happiness or lack of it. I hope you will continue to read on.
