The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner After Yale (Part 8, Chapter 1)
“Hello?” she said again.
I did not respond. She hung up and I totally lost it. Her voice was like honey, the same as her soft, honey-brown skin, as I remembered it. I wept for a long time, just sitting in a chair, hearing the rain fall and seeing it beat into the ground outside our front bay window. Even when the baby woke up and cried, I cried too when I went to pick him up and comfort him but there was no one there to make me feel better. It threw me so off course for the next several days that I promised myself never to call her again. However, it was a promise I would not keep.
Two years went by and Howie and I had another son. We named him Charles, after my father.
Not so long after Charlie was born, I happened to pick up the daily Post and sat reading it with my morning coffee. In the Arts and Entertainment Section I saw a first page photo of a vaguely familiar face. Upon looking closer I saw the caption under the photo. It was a picture of the artist, Chavez Chavez. His likeness took up half the page, showing several of his paintings including the man with the guitar, my personal favorite. The headline blared, “From Rags To Riches.”
I read the article with great interest. It told how Chavez had struggled in Tijuana, Mexico, for years without recognition, how he lived in abject poverty, until Bette Porter, a buyer for Edward Hunter’s Gallery in Beverly Hills, discovered him and brought him to California. Now, the smallest of Chavez’ paintings sold for just over $10,000 while he had garnered as much as $50,000 for his larger ones.
The article went on to say that Edward Hunter was featuring a collection of 40 new Chavez paintings for the month of December and that on December 1, 1988 there would be an invitational cocktail party hosted by Ms. Porter.
I looked away from the story and stared down at the floor, thinking of Bette in a stunning gown, with her hair meticulously coifed. I could just see her being glamorous and sophisticated, charming rich art patrons, art lovers and artists themselves. I thought of her in that world and the short time I shared it with her and I remembered often telling her how proud of her I was..

kbergin47, Thank you so much for your comments. It sure is nice to have someone like you around. Bette and Sissee have a destiny. It may be Bette and Tina in TLW but this is not TLW. Never lose site of the title here – the Adventures Of……..I promise you many more adventures.
Sissee, I’m willing to bet that you’ll have the same experience, no one will match up to Bette, no matter the gender. Thanks.
techgirl, I am really glad to see your post. Thanks for still being a reader. Sissee the writer knows what you mean about Bette being one of a kind but none of us knows how true that is and will continue to be like Sissee the character knows and feels it day in and day out, until………well, hopefully you will keep reading and find out what their destiny is.
I like this story, and in some ways I feel sorry for Sissee, but in other ways I find her pathetic. Maybe she’ll find happiness in upcoming chapters. I hope so.
Wow Sissee, great chapter! I feel so bad for Sissee, not being able to be with her true love. It will probably be a void that she may never fill. Thanks for filling us in on her life. I love this story, but you already know that. Have a great week!
My dear September, Yes, Bette and Sissee will meet again and actually, Bette is STILL single when you come right down to it. I know what you are saying though. Bette will eventually meet Tina and Sissee will be there to see it happen.
I can’t wait for the next update. I need to know how it goes on! I wonder how they meet again. Will Bette really be singel even after 8 years.
Id18, Thank you for your comment about being tossed over the Sissee character. There’s a whole lot more coming in this story about both Bette and Sissee’s happiness or lack of it. I hope you will continue to read on.
