The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner After Yale (Part 5, Chapter 11)
PART FIVE: PHILLIPS, WISCONSIN
Chapter 11
Just as Howie had volunteered to take Bette to the Gardner’s house, the bartender asked if they wanted another drink.
Bette shook her head no, but asked, “Do you know where the Gardner’s live?”
“Charlie or Willie?”
“Charlie,” said Bette.
“Yeah, they’re about two-three miles south of here. Straight shot down.”
“I need a ride,” she said.
“I’d do it myself but I’m just starting to get busy.”
“Helloooo,” interrupted Howie, with his eyebrow‘s raised. “I said I would give you a ride.”
Bette looked at the door. “Is it snowing?”
“I doubt it.”
“I don’t trust you if it’s snowing.”
“I’ll give you a police escort.”
“But you’re drunk!”
“So are you!”
“That’s all we need on the highway.”
“I’ll go down second street,” he offered. “No traffic.”
“There’s traffic on first street?”
“Come on,” Howie stood up and put several bills on the bar. “That should cover it for both of us.”
Bette stood up, opened her purse and took out her own money, laid it on the bar and said, “And then some.”
When she picked up her coat, he attempted to help her with it but she pulled away and frowned. “I’m not helping you with yours so you don’t help me with mine!”
They both bundled up and said farewell to the bartender who grinned a goodbye to them with a nod.
Bette and Howie trudged over to the nearby motel. It was not snowing. It was a very cold, black night. They both weaved a little as they walked to Howie’s car rental. When they got to it, he opened her side first. She slid in and then he let himself in behind the driver’s seat. They could see their own breath spewing in and out in the cold car.
“Is this the scene of the crime?” Bette asked, looking at the interior front and back.
“If you think so,” he said, backing out.
“You’re just going to drop me off, right?”
“Well, I would like to say hello to Sissee and her family. Her family likes me.”
“Now wait a minute,” protested Bette, as Howie drove out on the highway very slowly and carefully. “We can’t both show up at her door.”

i absolutely luved every chapter, the dynamics between the two rivals and of course this chapter….great, great job!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh God!! This was a great chapter. I’m a little weak now myself. Howie just keeps on keepin on. You can’t help but like him.
kbergin, Thank you for your vote of confidence. I’m glad you liked the chapter and even thought it was “great”. As for liking Howie, he’s just having trouble understanding what is going on with Sissee and feeling bad that he didn’t act sooner in their own relationship. He feels bad and maybe that is what makes him a sympathetic character. At least for the time being.
annieb69, Thank you so very much for your kind words. Comments are my royalties and as you can see, by that standard I am poor as a church mouse. I have a story to tell though and you can count on me to finish it.
