    PART FIVE: PHILLIPS, WISCONSIN

    Chapter 10

Howie asked Bette if Sissee knew that she was in Phillips.

“No,” she answered, looking into her drink.

“You mean you’re gonna surprise her?”

    “Yes.”

“How long do you plan to stay?”

“Only until she’s ready to leave.”

    “You’re going back together?”

    “Yes.”

Howie pondered that for a moment. Then he said, “What about her Wednesday plane ticket with me?”

    “She won’t need it.”

“How’s she gonna get back to California?”

    “We’ll fly.”

“You have a ticket for her?”

    “You could say that.”

“So, for sure, she’s not going back with me on my plane?”

“No Howie, she’s not going back with you. No more fucking blizzards, no more snow banks, no ditches to spend the fucking night in.”

Howie had been looking at her profile but with Bette’s last remarks, he sighed and took another sip of his J.D. Then, looking at the drink, just as Bette was still looking at hers, he said, “So, she told you?”

    “Of course she told me.”

“Yeah, that was really something. We were lucky we didn’t freeze to death.”

“So what’s your version?” she asked, glancing his way.

    “What did she tell you?”

    “You got snowbound.”

    “Yeah.”

    “And……?”

“I had some of this with me….” He lifted his glass. “……we kept drinking it to stay warm. I was more worried about her than me and I kept encouraging her to drink it. I really hoped it would put her to sleep so she wouldn’t have to worry about being scared. I think after all was said and done, she got too much of it and blacked out.”

Bette turned her head to look at him and kept her eyes on his profile. He looked back at her. So, face to face, she asked him, “And what about you? How much do you remember?”

“I have no trouble recalling anything. I guess I dozed a few times but I knew we were in pretty serious trouble so I tried staying awake as much as possible to do what I could.”

“So you remember everything?” she asked. “Everything that happened that night?”

    “Well, yeah…..”

    “So, what happened?”

“Our main thing was to stay warm.”
