The Absence of One chapter 28
From a distance, she could hear the sounds of the beach. The effect was immediate; the combination of the sounds and the sight of the garden calmed her down. Her eyes slid shut to soak in its effect, a smile tugging at her lips.
“Bette?” Barbara came around to the brunette after they exited the car. When Bette didn’t respond, she tried again, this time resting her hand on a shoulder.
“Yeah?” she turned to regard the woman, smiling sheepishly when she realized what she had done. “Sorry, just enjoying the sight.”
The senator took a step closer, leaning in to whisper in her ear, “I know a better way to channel that scrutiny.”
Bette threw her head back in laughter; the sudden lift in her mood delighted Barbara. She slipped her arms around the woman’s waist, and a pleasant tingle coursed through her body at the contact.
“You don’t waste much time, do you?”
“Chalk it up as making up for lost time,” Barbara winked. She guided both of them toward the house, ushering Bette in ahead of her. As soon as the front door closed, Barbara had the brunette against the wall, molding their bodies and lips together. “That outfit of yours is the death of me.”
A perfectly shaped eyebrow shot up. “Oh?”
Barbara smirked at the teasing. “Oh yeah.”
“Good to know,” Bette replied. “Now, are we going to keep this soiree going or are you going to give me a tour of the place?”
“Let’s start the tour, then,” Barbara whispered, leaning in to place a fleeting kiss. Pulling away, she led Bette around the house. She blew past the living room and the kitchen before guiding them toward the patio.
Beyond the sliding doors, the sight of the ocean stretched on. The garden was well taken care of, judging by the rows of flowers littering the yard. A set of lounge chairs crowded the edge of the lot, overlooking the shoreline.
Enthralled by her surroundings, Bette took a tentative step out. The view really was impressive, she decided, the overall effect appealing to the perfectionist in her. She ventured into the garden, taking her time to appreciate the floral creations.

I don’t equate laying your cards on the table with pushiness, so the Senator’s making all the right moves as far as I’m concerned; and she did restrain herself from kissing Bette “senseless,” which couldn’t have been easy. I love this pairing too and want to see it evolve, but Bette’s skittishness and in-the-background Tina are ominous signs. Whatever. This story is still one of my favs and I can’t wait until the next installemnt.
That was great!
Whoa, Barbara’s got their whole lives mapped out already. One step at a time, Senator. Give Bette a chance to catch her breath, geez. Good chapter, sky, nice to see you that you’ve picked this back up. Post soon
Ha Ha, jp22 you are funny!! The Senator just letting Bette know what she wants. No, if or buts about it! I think Bette’s going to need some time though considering Tina keeps popping in her head every three seconds.
That was very good!!! I do think that Barbara letting Bette know what she want’s is a very good thing. No game’s being played. Thanks PPVS
I’ve always loved this pairing. Always felt that BG was a perfect match for BP if that pesky Tina wasn’t in the way. I am so happy to see you’ve returned w/an excellent chapter that is well written and interesting. I like Barbara’s frankness. When you are of a certain age and you see what you like you just have to go for it. Thanks for writing a longer chapter. It’s more satisfying. PPS.
no i don’t know how to reply either…u make Barbara so nice but is Bette over Tina yet? pps
God! take a chill pill senator let Bette breathe. I still think Bette is going to get burn because she still playing with Tina and the senator emotions. If she doesn’t want Tina then tell her already.
