The Absence of One chapter 28
Her body flinched at the ensuing memory. Their attempt at a threesome had failed miserably, even when it seemed like a good idea at that time. Bette shook off the image; she was supposed to get ready for Barbara.
After smoothing her shirt one last time, Bette hurried out of her bedroom. Her presence still undetected, she took the chance to study the woman on her couch. The worry lines on Barbara’s face tugged at her heart; she knew their journey has just begun.
She cleared her throat softly to announce her arrival. “I’m ready.”
The senator got up quickly from her seat, turning around to the source of the voice. Bette flashed her a smile, walking over to grab her purse. Barbara, meanwhile, was rooted on the spot.
The white outfit was simple, yet the cutting accentuated the finer points of Bette’s body. Her eyes took in the outfit appreciatively, watching as Bette made her way back to her.
“You look like an angel,” Barbara rasped.
An earnest smile was Bette’s reply. “You don’t look too shabby yourself, Senator. Even when you dress down, you look gorgeous.”
Barbara chuckled; trust Bette to turn the table on her. “And here I thought I’m the only politician between us.”
“Shall we go?” Bette held out her hand to Barbara.
Accepting the proffered hand, Barbara stood and followed Bette to the door. “Is your driver outside?”
Shaking her head no, Barbara replied, “I thought I could ride in your car.”
Her eyes lit up at that thought. “I’m always open to spending more time with you.”
“Flattery will get you everywhere,” Barbara teased. “You’re smiling more.”
“I have more to smile about,” Bette shrugged as she backed out of her driveway.
“You’re calmer, I can sense it.”
Bette shrugged as a way of reply, feigning preoccupation with her driving. They spent the rest of the drive in relative silence, Barbara speaking only to give Bette directions. Every so often, she would steal a glance at Bette, marveling at the other woman.
About half an hour into the drive, Bette turned into a driveway that led to a cul-de-sac. The structure looked inviting, drawing its audience with strong lines and familiar shapes. She was captivated by the garden; clearly, the person who designed the home had paid extra attention to it.

I don’t equate laying your cards on the table with pushiness, so the Senator’s making all the right moves as far as I’m concerned; and she did restrain herself from kissing Bette “senseless,” which couldn’t have been easy. I love this pairing too and want to see it evolve, but Bette’s skittishness and in-the-background Tina are ominous signs. Whatever. This story is still one of my favs and I can’t wait until the next installemnt.
That was great!
Whoa, Barbara’s got their whole lives mapped out already. One step at a time, Senator. Give Bette a chance to catch her breath, geez. Good chapter, sky, nice to see you that you’ve picked this back up. Post soon
Ha Ha, jp22 you are funny!! The Senator just letting Bette know what she wants. No, if or buts about it! I think Bette’s going to need some time though considering Tina keeps popping in her head every three seconds.
That was very good!!! I do think that Barbara letting Bette know what she want’s is a very good thing. No game’s being played. Thanks PPVS
I’ve always loved this pairing. Always felt that BG was a perfect match for BP if that pesky Tina wasn’t in the way. I am so happy to see you’ve returned w/an excellent chapter that is well written and interesting. I like Barbara’s frankness. When you are of a certain age and you see what you like you just have to go for it. Thanks for writing a longer chapter. It’s more satisfying. PPS.
no i don’t know how to reply either…u make Barbara so nice but is Bette over Tina yet? pps
God! take a chill pill senator let Bette breathe. I still think Bette is going to get burn because she still playing with Tina and the senator emotions. If she doesn’t want Tina then tell her already.
