Talk to Me of Mendocino (rewritten) ~ Part One, Chapter One

’The hotel is full. How did you manage that?’

’I just asked.’ Meka smiled mischievously.  “What do you guys want from the bar?”

Angelica lifted her wine glass and shook her head no. Raph asked for a sparkling water.

Meka headed to the bar, placed her order, and had a quick exchange with the bartender. She walked back to Raph “He needs your ID.”

”There’s a minimum age for water with bubbles?”

Meka shrugged, “He’s worried you’ll burp and drive.”

    ~~

”Are you sure about which one is which?”

Tom watched the interactions of the two women and one man, all in their twenties. If that was them, then the man was Raph. Yet, he couldn’t imagine that the big hulking figure he was watching had been the bored little boy he had taught to play craps, earning the wrath of his stuffy mother. Tom analyzed the two young women, drawn to the one who had thrown herself in an armchair, and who had glared indignantly at the others at something said. He closely followed her movements as she walked to the bar, placed an order, then walked quickly back to the young man and carried something small back to the bar.

Angelica worried eyes followed Meka as she walked away. She had always taken to heart her responsibility as the eldest and, when young, had worried about what was happening to them during her alternate weeks with her Mama T. “Are you both really OK?”

Raph replied, “Meka is speaking at the official function.”

”Oh god no. What is she going to say?”

”She won’t tell me. She’s trying to drive me nuts but I won’t give her that satisfaction. Whatever she’s doing, I’m pretty sure she cleared it with Mama B.”

”You don’t know for sure?” Angelica’s voice was loud and betrayed her agitation.

”No, and I didn’t want to upset Mama in case she hadn’t.”

”I don’t have a good feeling about this.”

”It will be fine,” Raph assured Angelica, unconvincingly. “At least she won’t pass pot around to the dignitaries.”

”Could she have a bong hidden in her luggage?”

Raph laughed but Angelica could tell that his thoughts had wandered a bit.  “You know, in the will, your Mom said that she wanted pot passed around at the ceremony.”

”What! No one told me that.”

“Mama B decided that it was meant to be mischievous and she worried about what Meka might do if she knew.”

    ”Why do you know?”

    ”Aunt Alice.”

    ~~

As Tom watched the young woman leave the bar and return to her companions, a glass in each hand, he saw that the smiling bartender followed right behind, a glass in each of his hands.

Recognition suddenly hit him. He knew that girl’s walk, that smile, that self-assurance, that

charm. A bolt of joy shook his being and his face filled with happiness. A second later he

remembered, and tears suddenly burned the corners of his eyes.

    ”She’s just like Jodi.”

    ~~

Meka handed her brother a glass “Sparkling. Domestic.”

She placed the other glass on the coffee table around which the chairs were clustered, and

motioned to the bartender to do the same.

Meka smiled at the older man, “Thank-you. Mr. Meacham.”

    ”Pleased to help.”

After the man had left, Angelica raised a disapproving eyebrow, “That was?”

”He remembers Mommy and Mama. He was the bartender here back then.”

The three sat in silence for a few moments, each lost in individual thoughts. As usual, Meka broke the silence, motioning to the glasses on the table “Tequila shots for us. In tribute.”

Each reached for a glass, then stopped awkwardly.

”We should have a toast,” Angelica said.

The three searched their minds for what was appropriate.

Raph raised his glass and spoke “Everything is desire.”

His sisters raised their glasses. Tom, across the room, mirrored their actions. Angelica, Meka and Tom quietly repeated Raph’s well-chosen tribute to his late mother. “Everything is desire.”

    1. I am so glad you are continuing this story. Rewritten or not, and in spite of the “thriller content” I have no doubt you could have done a wonderful job. However, I am a reader, and I also cannot doubt a writers’ instincts about their own work. If you feel it needed to be rewritten, then I am on board. I know there are people out there that do not like the idea of Bette and Jodi being together (I am one of them!), especially for a long period of time. But your story intrigues me because I think the scenario is one that could have happened with the right (or should I say “WRONG”) circumstances. Even as a huge Tibette advocate, I can realize that given their tumultuous history, it wouldn’t be hard for either of them to “run” from their relationship. I can even see Bette turning back to Jodi. On the show, breaking up with Jodi was extremely difficult for Bette. She struggled (much to the dissapointment of us Tibette supporters) because she didn’t want to hurt Jodi. She obviously cared very deeply for her so the direction of your story is very believable to me. The interconnectivity of all the children is also believable and really draws me to this story. The possibilities for story direction are many, and I can’t wait to find out what you have in store for us. I love your writing and I am very much looking forward to the continuation of this story (rewrites and all!). Thanks Spumoni!
