Talk to Me of Mendocino (rewritten) ~ Part One, Chapter One
Fall 2032
Tom was certain that the New York lodge had not changed a bit. He craned his neck upward as he walked slowly through the reception area and saw the remembered vaulted ceiling with ancient-looking oak beams. Curiosity pricked him. He had time to explore and headed down a short wood paneled passageway where two large doors faced him. Tom cautiously pulled one open and looked into the large open room with windows lining its curved outer wall and with a vaulted ceiling, much higher than the one in the reception area but featuring the same oak beams. Tables of different sizes filled the room, except one corner where there was a very long table that overlooked the windows. Each table was covered in crisp white linens, with china, water goblets, wine glasses, and flatware all in place. The very long table had several small flower arrangements spaced along it center. The inanimate room had an air of nervous anticipation, as if it knew that in a few hours it would be filled with diners and be abuzz with activity.
He closed the door and wandered to the oak paneled lounge that lined a substantial part of one side of the first floor of the large structure. The seating areas were on three different levels, each three or four up or down stair steps from the others. The brown leather sofas and armchairs seemed the same. He knew that, twenty-five years later, they couldn’t be (could they?), but were replacements chosen very carefully so that they would look as if they had always been there. He would have bet good money that the oriental rugs covering the wood floors were the very same ones he had trod on a quarter century earlier. That was the appeal of the lodge, he knew that. Its usual visitors returned year after year because of its timelessness. They could sit in one of the nooks, brandy in hand, looking out the windows at the inky blackness on the other side of the glass, hearing the flickering of the flames in the fireplace and smelling the burning logs, and imagine they were at any time in their lives or maybe even lives before their own. He snorted at his silliness, though he vaguely recalled a book where someone sat in a room in the Dakota and traveled back through time to any point since the room had been built.

I am so glad you are continuing this story. Rewritten or not, and in spite of the “thriller content” I have no doubt you could have done a wonderful job. However, I am a reader, and I also cannot doubt a writers’ instincts about their own work. If you feel it needed to be rewritten, then I am on board. I know there are people out there that do not like the idea of Bette and Jodi being together (I am one of them!), especially for a long period of time. But your story intrigues me because I think the scenario is one that could have happened with the right (or should I say “WRONG”) circumstances. Even as a huge Tibette advocate, I can realize that given their tumultuous history, it wouldn’t be hard for either of them to “run” from their relationship. I can even see Bette turning back to Jodi. On the show, breaking up with Jodi was extremely difficult for Bette. She struggled (much to the dissapointment of us Tibette supporters) because she didn’t want to hurt Jodi. She obviously cared very deeply for her so the direction of your story is very believable to me. The interconnectivity of all the children is also believable and really draws me to this story. The possibilities for story direction are many, and I can’t wait to find out what you have in store for us. I love your writing and I am very much looking forward to the continuation of this story (rewrites and all!). Thanks Spumoni!

This is the first time for me reading this story. I really like it a lot so far. Looking forward to reading more. I read your notes as well. What stuck in my mind the whole time I was reading was Tina has an adult child and a six year old. :). PPS
I haven’t even started reading yet but wanted to express my joy at seeing you pick up this story. Mendocino or Majorca, wolves or unicorns, Bette humming or Tina snarling… you write, I read. :-)
Intricate, poignant and beautiful… just like the first time. PPS…
i have to admit, i’m not too fond of stories where B&T are older and not together but i love your stories and i have a feeling that you will make everything all right, drama or not…i’m reading :)
