    Some kind of wonderful

    Chapter 50

Bette had been in the University for a couple of hours. Her lectures and classes had ended at noon so she had gone to the library to do some reading and photocopy some articles so she had enough reading to keep her out of mischief over the weekend. Instead of commuting between the two apartments she was going to spend the entire weekend with Tina. She was beginning to think that she needed a coffee when her phone vibrated. She glanced at expecting it to be Tina or her mom – when she saw the name that flashed up she grinned and picking the phone up she hurried to the stairs so she could take the call
“Mel – how the hell are you ?”
“Hello Bette – I am fine – how are you ?”
    “Just great -how’s Viv ?”
“As wonderful as always  – ;look I am just coming out of the Columbia admissions block where I have been for a interview – you around ?”
    “In the library”
“Of course you are – why the hell did I even ask – where else would you be ? – so are you capable of leaving the library for a few hours ?”
“I am – I reckon you are about five minutes away from me. How about I meet you outside the library in 10 minutes”
    “Why not five minutes ?”
“Have you ever been on time for anything in your whole life ?”
“I was on time for my interview “ Mel said in her California tone
“Well I hope you told them not to expect that of you more than say once or twice a term”
“Get lost Porter – I will see you in 10 minutes “
“Okay – see you soon “
Bette hung up and shook her head  – well this was going to be entertaining. Bette collected her papers and put the books back on the stacks. She stood outside the library under a tree watching the rain. Despite being only “five minutes away “ and Bette giving her ten minutes to arrive it was 15 minutes before Bette spotted her friend
“Mel “ Bette shouted and hurried across the grass. Mel turned and ran towards Bette. They greeted each other with a massive hug. Bette grinned at Mel
“What on earth makes you think Columbia want you on their campus ?” Bette teased
“What with me being one of the leading archaeologists of my generation as my tutor told me  “ Mel retorted “Anyway – lead me to food Porter”
Bette lead the way to the student building and they hurried into the cafe
“I am so hungry “ Mel said “What’s the food like in here ?”
“Subsidised “ Bette replied “I don’t eat here that often but I am hungry today “
“Well lets get a table “
Bette lead the way through the tables until they found one near the counter and flopped down putting their bags on seats and removing thick winter jackets. Bette grinned as when Mel removed her long coat she was wearing a black business suit. Mel saw Bette’s eyebrow shot up
    “Just say it Porter “
“Not very Indiana Jones is it ?”
“It was an interview – not a screen test “

    1. It was a very nice chapter. really liked it. I was wondering, when you come into the picture Bette friends.
I hope the meeting with Tina well will succeed.
I really was afraid that Alice will be one of those friends, but I’m glad: not! :-D

    2. Loved this update! “Not very Indiana Jones, is it? It was an interview not a screen test.” That is just too funny. Can’t wait for Bette’s friends and Tina to meet.

    3. Glad to see more of the backstory during the college years of Bette and Tina. I like Mel ( I was so afraid that Alice would put in an appearance). True friends are those that get us through tough times, so Mel and Viv are just what Tina and Bette need for their support circle. Thanks for posting.

    4. Loved it also! Hope Bette does tell her Mom, Dad, Emma and Tina Dads. Please let us enjoy that scene. Kate don’t need to know. She too busy with her head between the tart legs. PPS
