‘Bette?’ She looked up at the sound of her name. Kit was now standing upright in the doorway waiting. She couldn’t give Kit that answer. She wouldn’t be able to understand it. She wasn’t sure of what they knew but she knew them enough to know that the only thing that mattered to them was that she had betrayed Tina by sleeping with someone else, and in a simple world that is exactly what she had done.

Kit was finding it impossible to read Bette without her saying anything. She had not denied what she had done and there was no way Kit would have believed her now anyway. If Kit had thought the silence was merely Bette’s way of trying to think of what to say, considering her actions and her reasons for them she may have understood, but there was no hint of remorse on Bette’s face. ‘Aren’t you going to say anything?’

Bette shrugged her shoulders, ‘What do you expect me to say Kit?’ Her voice so calm. Kit looked at her in disbelief, ‘I don’t know. Maybe that you’re sorry. That you wanna know where your wife is so you can go and get her back.’

‘Tina knows where her home is Kit. When she’s ready she’ll come back.’

‘What? When she’s ready? And when exactly do you think that’ll be Bette? When she’s gotten over the fact that you were ***** someone behind her back?’ Kit searched Bette’s face for an answer but again found none, just a slight shaking of Bette’s head. Kit crossed the short distance between the two of them so they were standing directly opposite each other. ‘Did you even think about Tina? How much this would hurt her after everything -’

‘I have thought about nothing except Tina for the last seven years!’ Bette exploded.

Taken aback by Bette’s words Kit took a step back. She couldn’t believe the words that had just come out of Bette’s mouth and had to tilt her head slightly to make sure the person before her was in fact her sister. Confirming it was Kit spoke again, ‘And then what? You decided to take a break? Stop thinking about your wife and think about you for a while?’
