Chapter 4

‘Are you sure you don’t want me to go in there with you? You don’t know what state she’s gonna be in.’ They had been sat outside the house for half an hour whilst Kit tried to decide what she was going to say. To be honest, she had spent most of the ride from The Planet trying to convince herself that what Dana had said was actually true. ‘Kit?’

Kit turned and looked at Ivan and though she wanted it to be more she could only manage the slightest of smiles in response. He had been there for her these past few weeks whenever she had needed him, and for the first time in too long Kit felt as though she had someone in her life on whom she could depend and who would not judge her for her past choices.

Choices, not mistakes, because that’s what Ivan made her feel they were. When she told him about David and how she had left him with Melvin to raise he understood. He didn’t see a woman who had abandoned her child but one who thought about what would be best for him and in doing so risked losing him forever.

Her drinking had been done to excess, but she had made the choice to stop doing that and he would support her through it. He had always been there to take her wherever she needed to, and now there he was again taking her to Bette’s and asking if she needed more support. Looking at him, she thought to herself, he’d support her through it all.

‘No Ivan, I have to do this.’ Ivan shook his head, he didn’t like the idea of Kit going in there by herself, but he understood it. That was her sister in there and she would support her and do anything she needed to do for her, just as he would for Kit. ‘Okay. But if you need me for anything, you call me.’ Ivan looked her straight in the eye to make sure she knew he meant every word. Kit nodded in reply.

She placed her hands on the dashboard and took in a deep breath to steady her nerves. She turned to Ivan once more and he smiled back, from that she took her strength. She stepped out of the car and turning back as she closed the door she bent down and lent on the car door. ‘Thank you, for everything. You don’t know what it means to me -’
