    Provocations Linger- Chapter 11

    2008- Friday night
    Museum of Modern Art, 8PM
    Mid town Manhattan

Bette stepped out of the museum into a warm June evening. She and Judith Trope were the last to leave the opening and both wore a smile.

The MOMA, had it’s own particular energy which, combined with the success of the Trope exhibit, had made both women giddy. Shaking hands, Bette congratulated Judith again before making plans to get in touch Monday.

“I’m heading back to Washington Square, Bette, do you want to share a cab?”

Bette hesitated only a moment before inviting Judith to join her instead, “Actually Judith, I’m meeting Helena Peabody nearby for a late dinner and to celebrate a bit. Would you care to join us? I know Helena would be happy to have you.”

The petite blonde stared at Bette a moment. “Wait. I asked Helena if she knew you and she said no. In fact she was quite emphatic about it. She berated me for assuming all lesbians know each other…. That ass…” Judith laughed.  “I only thought you’d know her because of her mother,” she defended.

“Well, I did just meet her this morning,” Bette explained, “through her mother,” she added laughing. She failed to mention their other connection.

Judith laughed again too, obviously still quite pleased about her mother’s show. She politely declined Bette’s offer, excusing herself after promising again they’d be in touch about their upcoming project.

    The Gotham Lounge- 5th Avenue

Fifteen minutes later Bette walked into the restaurant Helena had selected and was led to a table where the heiress was already seated. The Peabody influence was evident in their table’s location. Discreetly bordered by floor to ceiling bookshelves and a fireplace, it offered exceptional views of their surroundings. Bette wondered if it was a former library.

Almost as soon as Bette sat down a bottle of Dom Perignon was delivered to them.

“Helena! What’s this?” Bette smiled, surprised.

“Just a little something to mark the occasion of your winning the Trope show.” Helena dismissed the extravagance, smiling.

Bette smiled back at her hostess, genuinely flattered by the trouble Helena was going to on her behalf. She’d been surprised when the Brit suggested they meet for dinner after the opening but Helena was adamant once she found out that Bette had no plans.

    1. I’m really liking the Bette/Helena interactions. It’ll be interesting if Bette invites herself out to Fire Island over the weekend… Thanks for posting!

    2. I have absolutely no problem believing the biggest of coincidences if they come written in a story peppered with sentences like “Oh please. Revolting enough I have to admit the woman loved you, not me. Don’t think for a minute I’m going to cheer you up about it too.” This was great, I’m glad you decided to continue with it

    3. Implausible, plausible… doesn’t matter when the story is so well written. Love the open and honest Bette/Helena dialogue and just hope it continues as Bette decides to stay the weekend. Would hate for Bette to miss Tina in the fashion show dress!

    4. I say Helena invites Bette to Fire Island as friends but Helena decides she is going to help Bette get Tina back by making Tina jealous of the fact that Bette is now her date this year. Of course Bette won’t know what Helena is up to. Sam has to know she is NEVER going to get forever with Tina.

    5. I’m thoroughly enjoying this story… so glad you’re continuing it. I hope Tina and Bette makes plans to get together when they get back to LA so they can continue to work out their issues. Neither one of them has moved on….they still belong together.

    6. Hahahaha…I loved that line…”Oh please, I seem to be running into Tina’s ex-lovers and girlfriends all over the place.” Zuzu…I also like the concept of Helena teaming up with Bette to try and get Tina and Bette back together again. I always thought that Bette and Helena could be a real force to be reckoned with if they ever stuck together on something. Great update!

    7. I am so pleased to see this story continue – I liked it when you started and had accepted the fact that you might not continue after so much time elapsed – so when I saw the title come up recently I was elated. Such a good story. I hope the computer and life cooperate for this summer so you can write on . . .

    8. Sweet, Zuzu! Great pace and you can feel the drama building. Let the games begin for Ms. Bette and Ms. Peabody. 2 Alpha females playing cupid with Tina, this will definitely be good. You’re doing a great job! PPS!

    9. What a great update and thank you I have so missed this. Will Bette go with Helena and go get Tina back – I hope so hope so :) Thank you again!

    10. Just catching up and enjoying this story very much – thank you! Do I see a Tina-Sam-Helena-Bette encounter in the near future? Should be very interesting!
