    No Good Deed Goes Unpunished

Bette smiled, leaning in close. “Who needs it?”

Their lips met in a sweet kiss.

“Am I forgiven?” Bette asked, pulling away.

“For now,” Tina said. “But now that you’ve shown me how into the holidays you can be, there’s something else I’m going to have you do.”

“Like what?” Bette asked with a look of faint dread.

Tina had to laugh. “What happened to your change of heart, hm?”

    “The change is gradual, T.”

“Right. Well! We’ll see what we can do to hasten your transformation, shall we?”

Bette groaned. “What now? What is it you want me to do?”

“You’ll see,” Tina said with a wink.

“Tina, I’m not comfortable with this.”

“Why ever not?” Tina said, knowing full well why Bette would be uncomfortable.

“Look, T. I know you were irked at me when I went and bought a tree without you. You promised revenge, but this is too much,” Bette pleaded.

    “Revenge? Don’t be so dramatic.”

“This punishment doesn’t fit the crime.”

“This is hardly a punishment,” Tina said. She picked up a headband that had antlers and lifted her arm as if to plunk them down on Bette’s head. Bette flinched away and Tina laughed. “Hold still.”

Bette heaved a huge sigh as Tina fitted the antlers with bells on their tips into Bette’s hair.

“There we are,” Tina said, all smiles. Bette gazed at her with her eyes half-lidded. There was a giggle from the floor. Bette looked down at Angie, causing the antlers to jingle merrily.

“You look like Rudolph, Mama,” Angie informed her, smiling. Bette shook her head slightly, and Angie giggled again.

“Why don’t you wear these, sweetheart?” Bette started to pull the headband off when Tina intervened.

“Angie has her own pair,” Tina said, carefully putting the headband on Angie’s head. “There. Now you match. My two reindeer.”

“We match, Mama!” Angie echoed, shaking her head vigorously to make the bells on her antlers ring.

“And now Mama can’t take hers off,” Tina said in a low aside to Bette, raising her eyebrows in a challenge. “Can she?”

“Blackmail,” Bette muttered. Tina knew that Bette would put up with just about anything rather than disappoint Angie.
