    No Good Deed Goes Unpunished

“No problem. I’ve got to go, I’m afraid. I followed Bette here in my car.”

“Are you sure you don’t want to stay for coffee or anything?”

“I would, but I can’t today. I’ll call you later. Have fun decorating,” Helena said, making her way to the door.

    “See you.”

Bette was coming in just as Helena was going out. Bette thanked Helena for her help again and they said their goodbyes. Bette shut the door and Angie ran over to Bette, hopping around in her excitement.

“Mama, let’s put the tree up now!” Angie said.

“We will in a minute, boo. Take off your coat and go sit on the chair and wait for me and Mommy, ok?”

Angie peeled out of her coat and handed it to Tina, who hung it up near the door. The little girl bounded over to the chair with the kind of energy only a three year old could expend in such a small space and amount of time.

Tina smiled after her daughter and turned back to Bette, raising her eyebrows. “You bought a tree?”

    “Yes. Do you like it?”

“The tree is fine. I like it. I’m not sure that I like that you went without me.”

“Yeah, about that,” Bette said, looking sheepish. “I just wanted to surprise you.”

“Picking a tree is one of my favorite things about the holidays, Bette. You know that.”

“I do! I just wanted to show you that I was making an effort to get into the spirit of things. I thought you would be glad.”

    “I am, babe. I guess.”

    “You guess?”

“Well… it’s just that I’m used to being the one who’s all gung-ho about the holidays. To be honest? I think it’s fun to tweak your ‘Scrooge’ side with this stuff.”

“Did you forget that in the end, Scrooge has a change of heart?”

Tina smiled. “I guess I did.”

“And you have to admit, I did a pretty good job picking out an amazing tree.”

“That you did,” Tina said, coming closer. “But I’m afraid you forgot one thing,” she said regretfully, wrapping her arms around Bette’s waist.

    “I did? What?”

“Well, if you’re going to decorate this place, you’ve got to do it right. Where’s the mistletoe?”
