    Franklin shifted uncomfortably and smiled thinly. Well, I think we should wait until Monday.

    Bettes left hand found it self resting menacingly on her hip, her prized childrens book under her right arm. If theres something to discuss, Id like to know the subject matter before I leave. That way I can be prepared for our meeting.

    Again, her boss shifted where he stood, his steely blue eyes averting her intense gaze. Well, I really think we should just wait. Theres no need to , he began.

    Bette cut him off, her dark brown pools burning with anger. Franklin, would you stop beating around the bush and just spit it out.

    Well, he began, his third well in three sentences. The uh.the board and I have decided to buy out your contract., he said, his voice low, his eyes finally meeting Bettes.

    What?, she asked, her shock registering on her face.

    We think its best that., he began.

    We think? or You and Helena Peabody think?, she countered.

    Franklin raised his hands in a gesture of peace and calm. Look Bette, he said.

    No, you look! Youre firing me on the day of my fathers funeral. I have a wife to take care of and a baby on the way. You dont even have to tell me where this idea came from. You dont have enough imagination to have come up with this plan. So, how much is she paying you to do this?, asked Bette.

    Finally, Franklin was silent. He had nothing else to say, his head hanging low, his eyes downcast.

    Bettes dark eyes continued to bore down on him, her lips pursed, her cheeks slightly flushed. Your silence speaks volumes. I guess this makes you my pimp. You prostituted me out to the highest bidder. I shouldnt be surprised though. This is well within the boundaries of your scrupulous character.

    Bette, you have to understand, he began.

    Understand what? Understand you wanting to fire me when my father dies, when my wife is pregnant with our child?, asked Bette.

    Franklin again started pleading with her to understand the boards decision and as his fallacious words fell on her deaf ears, something within the Type-A, ivy-league educated woman snapped. It could have been the weight of impending motherhood putting the pieces of her life into perspective or the death of her seemingly invincible father that caused her to reorder her priorities. Whatever the cause, Franklins useless babbling and her position at the CAC were suddenly meaningless.
