The affair lasted for six months before Maxine started making demands on Melvin. She threatened that he get a divorce from his first wife or else she would end their relationship. She wanted a future with this man whom she loved passionately and without reason but she was no longer willing to be just the other woman. She’d already sacrificed too much and she could tell that if Melvin had his way he’d have been just as happy with the status quo.

Melvin Porter was a bit of a Casanova all through high school. He was very handsome and besides that being quarterback on the football team made him the most popular boy in school. All the girls wanted his attention and got it. In addition to being top jock he also excelled in his academic studies and even as a young boy he’d already developed an intrinsic entrepreneurial spirit which would lead him into a very lucrative and successful career as a Venture Capitalist.

Melvin had every intention of playing the field but he was also astute enough to realize that having a stable personal life would be a good image to project a maturity that he needed in business to instill confidence in investors. The opportunity presented itself when his college girlfriend told him she was pregnant and he proposed marriage. Melvin Porter and Veronica ‘Ronnie’ Marsh had dated casually during high school but met up again at Harvard. They completed their undergraduate studies then got married. Ronnie gave birth to a beautiful daughter whom they named Katherine ‘Kit’ Porter. Melvin went on to get his masters and PhD in Business while Ronnie gave up her ambition to go to law school and instead took a corporate job and cared for their daughter.

They were a happy young family in the early days but as Melvin excelled in the business world his social circle broadened. There were too many opportunities to flirt and temptations for him to resist returning to his philandering ways. Ronnie tried to ignore what was going on in order to keep her family together but after a while she started doing her own thing leaving Kit to fend for herself. It was inevitable that without adult supervision the child got lost in the shuffle. At thirteen Kit had already started experimenting with sex, alcohol and drugs. By the time her parents took notice she was seventeen and it was too late; they’d already lost her.
