    As DA Richardson gathered her papers and left her office this bright and sunny Los Angeles Monday, she steeled herself for what she knew would be gathering outside the Courthouse.  As much as she had become accustomed to the public’s insatiable appetite for someone else’s woes, the first glance of the ‘step right up, folks’ carnival and circus-like atmosphere still made her shake her head at the insanity of it.

     

    Nancy turned the corner to head towards the Courthouse steps – and there the carnival barkers, dressed as representatives of the media, clamored together awaiting the Ringmaster’s sign that the next ‘greatest show on earth’ was about to begin.

     

    One head turned and recognized her – “There’s the DA!” Then a tide of heads with microphones attached to their lips all turned in that direction.

     

    Christ, here it comes, Nancy thought to herself.

     

     

    “DA Richardson, what do you have to say about Faye Buckley?”

     

    “Is Buckley going to take a plea bargain?”

     

    “Is the radical right on trial here?”

     

    “Is it the radical right against ***** and Lesbians?”

     

    “GOD HATES *****!” shouted a group of placard swinging people.

     

    Nancy‘s eyes narrowed in on that last remark.  She knows she cannot in her position as DA use this time as her personal pulpit to answer these hideous remarks.  What would she really like to do?  How about taking those hateful words, shoving it down the throats of these idiots and pulling it out their *****.  Then maybe they would see their words in their true light – covered with ***** – not truth according to their gospel.   Ooooh, Nancy thought, was that a little harsh?nah, not really –

     

    She stepped to the microphones.

     

    “Today will begin the jury selection in the case of State vs. Faye Buckley.  The defendant will be afforded all the rights and privileges guaranteed to her under our system of Law.   A jury of her peers will decide whether or not she is guilty of this vicious crime.”
