Listen to your heart – Ch3

The message started Oh Hi…youre not there..umm its Tina.. there was a pause.

Bette sprinted across the kitchen and lunged for the phone. Yes..yes..Im here..dont hang up she said breathlessly her heart beating wildly at the familiar sound of Tinas voice.

There was an awkward silence; neither knowing quite what to say next.

Tina pushed her hair behind her ear and swallowed the lump in her throat that had formed as soon as shed heard Bettes low sultry voice. Its now or never, she told herself so she launched into her prepared speech Bette, I got your letter and I was wondering whether we could meet. I was hoping we could talk.

Bettes heart lurched at Tinas words, hope and fear collided and she had to take a deep breath before she was able to answer calmly I can do that..tell me when and where..

Tina smiled to herself, she was relieved that the conversation was at least cordial, maybe even warm, and that there was no vestige of the anger that had been evident in the few exchanges theyd had in the months before shed left LA Im still at my mothers but I thought I could come to LA, maybe on the weekend.I havent booked or anything so..

Stay here.. Bette interrupted, voicing her impulsive thought.

Tina paused, she wanted to take Bette up on the offer but she knew it wouldnt be fair to Bette or Emily Umm..I dont think thatd work..

Bette swallowed hard, unsure if this was Tinas way of telling her that things werent going to be OK. She shook her heard, trying to wipe the image away telling herself that Tina was just being cautious. OK..well would you like me to book a hotel for you?

No .. thats OK..Ill book one through my travel agent.. Tina said.

This wasnt going as well as Bette had hoped Well how about you come see my apartment..Ill organise lunch..

Sure ..but nothing fancy OK.. Tina said smiling; knowing Bette would swing by whichever was her current favourite restaurant and get take out.

Is 11 oclock Saturday OK with you? Bette asked feeling the polite conversation was a little surreal given the acrimony of their final days together We can talk before lunch.

Ummhmm thatd work for me said Tina then after a moment Uh..can you tell me where you live?

Bette thought how sad it was that the person she still cared most about in the world didnt even know her address. It was just one more reminder of how far apart theyd grown.

OK then said Tina when shed written the address down, she paused wanting to keep Bette on the line but not knowing what else to say Umm well then Ill see you on Saturday at 11 oclock.uh ..Bye..

Bette wanted to tell her how much she still loved her but she held back, if things went to plan she may have years to tell her again and again, and if they didnt – well she may still tell her anyway -but it was something that could wait until they were face-to-face Bye was all she said.

Bette slowly placed the phone down and stood staring at her apartment. What would Tina think of it? It was nothing like the little house theyd shared, which was exactly why shed picked it. She hummed quietly to herself; excited by the prospect of seeing Tina again.

Tina placed the phone back in its cradle. Bette seemed happy to hear from her, keen for them to get together, but maybe she was just ready for them to move on and be friends.

Tina felt a little guilty not telling Bette about Emily but after three years it wasnt something she felt comfortable telling her over the phone. She moved through the house to find Emily, tell her that they were going to travel on an airplane.
