Ligeia’s Poet: LA Confidential
Bette chuckled, taking another drag. They were content to smoke quietly for a while, before Bette spoke again. “Our first time was in this house.”
“And our second…our third…that time on the kitchen table…on the floor…against the wall…” Helena emphasized each memory with a kiss while Bette blushed more and more.
“hey guys!” They looked up and waved as Shane walked out of her front door and jogged over to join them for a smoke. “Are you here for the night?” Her voice was so hopeful that Helena and Bette nodded without even looking at one another. “Want a beer?”
“Yessssss…” Bette wiggled excitedly. “Whatcha got?”
“Some imported shit, just for you.” Shane said with a wink. When she returned again, she brought a case of Stella. “it’s Friday, no work tomorrow? No?” She checked with Helena who shook her head. “No?” She checked with Bette, comically encouraging her to shake her head as well. “And we’re swimming tomorrow afternoon, yes?” She nodded, ensuring that they both nodded as well.
“And I’m making gourmet burgers. Testing out recipes, using Bison meat.” Helena thought aloud.
“sounds fucking fantastic.” Shane sighed happily, licking an errant drop of beer from between her thumb and forefinger. “It’s good you’re keeping the house by the way.”
Helena nodded. Bette uncapped a beer and handed it to her, before taking a swig of her own.
“It’s good…” Shane said again. “Cuz…couples let their worlds shrink when they really should be doing the opposite, when they make commitments, I mean.”
They all nodded at the sage words of a woman for whom commitment would only ever be granted to her small group of friends.
Bette thought hard about those words, a few days later, as she passed a jewelry shop. In the window, a beautiful antique bracelet with Celtic designs sat atop a carved teak box. The bracelet gave her an idea she had never considered, but it also reminded her of something that had occured long before her and Helena and Shane’s conversation on her porch.
In her mind, she went back to the day when they chose out Carmen’s wedding dress, for the disastrous non-wedding of the century.
Helena’s hand, holding a white gown against Bette’s chest, had paused strangely when Bette pushed the gown away. A flash of something akin to regret, or perhaps confusion, passed over Helena’s features and was mirrored in Bette’s.
Looking back on it, Bette wondered if they had had a kind of premonition.
She looked at the bracelet, remembering another conversation, while she and Helena lounged in the pool together one afternoon.
“I won’t wear someone’s ring.” Helena had said with a shrug.
Bette was sipping some sugary, alcoholic beverage, in order to deal, in part, with her girlfriend’s refusal to ever consider marriage. She wanted to consider it at least. “Why not?”
“I’d wear a bracelet.” Was what Helena said then.
Bette had let it go, realizing that she didn’t really care anyway.
Now, Bette smirked as she remembered the rest of that day and evening. It always seemed that no matter how uptight she got, or how worried, Helena could calm her.
An hour later, Bette sat back at her desk, going over a new Peabody Foundation scholarship. She was thoroughly amused at how Helena’s mother had snuck that one in, without telling either woman her intentions.
In behind her computer, nestled in a wrapped box, a newly purchased antique bracelet waited for the right moment to be opened.

I had all sorts of emotions going on with this chapter-sad, happy, sexy, yay that they’re keeping the house…more soon??? oh when u can then.
I admit to a twinge of disappointment at being deprived of Crazy Jenny in drag, but Helena and Bette’s outfits more than compensated, as did their intriguing reflections on “Bound” and OMFG alleyway sex (among other things). The reference to the wedding-dress scene makes me wistful. A Season 3 Belena moment (like ski-lift togetherness) that led precisely nowhere. Le sigh.
Loved this, loved this, loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooved this!!!! It was so..real! Real emotions, fears, real love, funny, sad, real. I would love to see Bette high…maybe sometime you can write of Bette and Helena getting high together and dreaming those dreams. Did I tell you I LOVED this chap????? THANX hb!
Can one have real fun while pretend moshing to faux punk? Especially when you could have real punk? Thanks for throwing in Bound, maybe not a great movie, but a pretty good one in many ways and darkly funny. Certainly light years better than that recent and rather sorry thing with the teacher and the schoolgirl, Anabelle. How liberating to have the same old punishment meated out at the end. Anyway, as usual you take us many places and show us many things not normally associated with sexy humor.
I have reread this now that I’m awake. Very smooth reading HB, really loved it. I missed the alley thing. Oh those girls are so naughty. *blush* Please post soon on this story. Great bringing up that wedding dress thing. They looked so hot together that scene even if Bette had a snarl. Did you ever notice the name of the store, Angelique. Totally cool
she may have had a snarl but she wasn’t snarling when her eyes were glued to helena’s for two seconds too long…they did it on purpose, now we’ve set up our ship, and they don’t have to give us what we want. c’est television’s trickery since the onset of the internet. pfftfaux punk has its good moments i think…lol
Surprisingly (or not), I quite liked these two in drag. I like the idea of a bracelet instead of a ring even more. More soonish, even though there’s getting to be a queue of things. Matters not, I want them all. ;) cheers, hb
Captain here….Great update. I think you abandoned that standing sex think too soon, you know Bette up against wall legs around Helena..OK enough…I wonder about toys with them..I think that might be too much for Squirl to bear…Whew!!!
Some may call me weird but you made me laugh out loud with the “blahbiddyblahbiddyblah” heheh… it’s great that Peggy is trying to help… I can’t wait for helena’s reaction to the bracelet… I loved it!!!! this story is awesome and really well written!!! PPS
The encounter on the table started my wheels turning but the alley and the brickwall absolutely put me over the top. I love the way you allow the characters to follow their impulses with abandonment. I am patiently waiting for Bette to give her the bracelet…great story!
oh, i liked this alot!! great job…
Hello HB, well you know that this is one of my favs, just love this story. You really layer all of your stories with an intricacy and intelligence that is unparalleled. You subtly show how human fears and emotions never stay on the surface, they are expressed in what and how we interact. The intimacy that you portray shows desire, lust and love coursing through it. I love the idea of a bracelet being exchanged, it signifies a defiance towards a custom that doesn’t willingly accept you, but also allows one to complete the intimate connection that we all desire within our lives, it bonds two souls together. Sincerely, JC
that was one crazy chapter, and i luved every word!!!great, great job as usual!!
