    Ligeia’s Poet: LA Confidential

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
    On holiday

One month after her trip with Bette to Arizona, Helena soaked in her oversized, claw-foot bath, in the sectioned off area of the home which Shane and Alice had named ‘Hippie-central’.  It was the site of their drug induced dreaming, her and Bette’s debauchery and romantic meanderings, and when her children were around, it was a home intended for re-imagining what was possible in their already planned out little lives.  Helena scowled, thinking this last thing over.  She squeezed the sponge in her hands and ran hot, lavender scented water, over her shoulders. What kind of example should she set for her children, given that Winnie had them in mainstream schooling? For one thing, Helena had to reconsider the nuclear family model that her kids’ school was socializing them into.

She called out to Bette, who sat sleepily in front of her laptop at the kitchen table.

“Darling, I think we should re-imagine the whole ‘moving in’ thing.”

Bette looked up, surprised. It was 7pm on a weeknight. Helena was getting ready for a crazy drag-themed night at The Planet. Why were they talking about this now? “Are you having second thoughts?” Her home was being appraised by a realtor the next day.

“Not about living with you.” Helena spoke in a normal voice, as Bette walked into the room. “About having extra space…”

Bette nodded carefully. “I don’t follow your logic. The sale of my home will finance our café.”

“This is true. I just don’t want my children to think that we’ve fallen into hetero-normative-ville…”

“Is that a real village?” Bette quipped.

Helena nodded. “It is. I’ve been there. It’s yucky.” She giggled as Bette splashed her.

“You’ve not been there since you were a teenager. Look,” Bette groaned as she leaned down tiredly. “I don’t know how to get around this…”

“Unless I take my mother’s money.” Helena said softly.

On a small table near the front entrance, three cheques for ridiculous sums of money, sat waiting. If Helena cashed them, they would pay for her café, and would even pay the artists whose work would fill the walls and shelves.  Helena and Bette could then cash in a small profit which, if they took Peggy’s money, they would sink into something more useful than mortgages or rent or electric bills.

    1. I admit to a twinge of disappointment at being deprived of Crazy Jenny in drag, but Helena and Bette’s outfits more than compensated, as did their intriguing reflections on “Bound” and OMFG alleyway sex (among other things). The reference to the wedding-dress scene makes me wistful. A Season 3 Belena moment (like ski-lift togetherness) that led precisely nowhere. Le sigh.

    2. Loved this, loved this, loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooved this!!!! It was so..real! Real emotions, fears, real love, funny, sad, real. I would love to see Bette high…maybe sometime you can write of Bette and Helena getting high together and dreaming those dreams. Did I tell you I LOVED this chap????? THANX hb!

    3. Can one have real fun while pretend moshing to faux punk? Especially when you could have real punk? Thanks for throwing in Bound, maybe not a great movie, but a pretty good one in many ways and darkly funny. Certainly light years better than that recent and rather sorry thing with the teacher and the schoolgirl, Anabelle. How liberating to have the same old punishment meated out at the end. Anyway, as usual you take us many places and show us many things not normally associated with sexy humor.

    4. I have reread this now that I’m awake. Very smooth reading HB, really loved it. I missed the alley thing. Oh those girls are so naughty. *blush* Please post soon on this story. Great bringing up that wedding dress thing. They looked so hot together that scene even if Bette had a snarl. Did you ever notice the name of the store, Angelique. Totally cool

    5. she may have had a snarl but she wasn’t snarling when her eyes were glued to helena’s for two seconds too long…they did it on purpose, now we’ve set up our ship, and they don’t have to give us what we want. c’est television’s trickery since the onset of the internet. pfftfaux punk has its good moments i think…lol

    6. Surprisingly (or not), I quite liked these two in drag. I like the idea of a bracelet instead of a ring even more. More soonish, even though there’s getting to be a queue of things. Matters not, I want them all. ;) cheers, hb

    7. Captain here….Great update. I think you abandoned that standing sex think too soon, you know Bette up against wall legs around Helena..OK enough…I wonder about toys with them..I think that might be too much for Squirl to bear…Whew!!!

    8. Some may call me weird but you made me laugh out loud with the “blahbiddyblahbiddyblah” heheh… it’s great that Peggy is trying to help… I can’t wait for helena’s reaction to the bracelet… I loved it!!!! this story is awesome and really well written!!! PPS

    9. The encounter on the table started my wheels turning but the alley and the brickwall absolutely put me over the top. I love the way you allow the characters to follow their impulses with abandonment. I am patiently waiting for Bette to give her the bracelet…great story!

    10. Hello HB, well you know that this is one of my favs, just love this story. You really layer all of your stories with an intricacy and intelligence that is unparalleled. You subtly show how human fears and emotions never stay on the surface, they are expressed in what and how we interact. The intimacy that you portray shows desire, lust and love coursing through it. I love the idea of a bracelet being exchanged, it signifies a defiance towards a custom that doesn’t willingly accept you, but also allows one to complete the intimate connection that we all desire within our lives, it bonds two souls together. Sincerely, JC
