    Lifeline – Bette and Tina

“I’m sorry.  We have a new gaffer on the job today and I had to straighten something out real quick.  Sorry to keep you hanging.  So, you’re not working, right?  I don’t want you tensing back up.  When I get home I’ll get you into a nice, hot bath, okay?”

“Will you be getting in with me?”

    “I think I would crowd you…”

“You would not.  We fit in the tub together perfectly,” Bette smiled, looking forward to the feel of Tina’s head against her chest, the smell of bath salts and steam rising, the taste of Tina’s neck on her lips.

    “Yes, we do.”

    “Want to hear something funny?”

    “Sure,” Tina answered brightly.

    “You’re gonna laugh,” Bette added.

    “Try me.”

    “When you left this morning…”

    “Uh-huh…”

“I heard the door close and your footsteps going down the walk…”

“Yeah…”  Tina waited for the funny part.

“And my throat tightened up all of a sudden…without any warning…”

“What do you mean, Bette?”  Tina sounded alarmed.

    “No, no.  I was okay, T.  But it was as if…well, I felt…like I might cry…”

Her words hung in the air for a moment while Tina thought about what she was saying.  Bette continued before Tina could speak.

“I realized that you hadn’t even really left the house and I already missed you.  I was homesick for you… and I was at home.  Isn’t that funny, T?”

There was silence on the other end of the line and then Bette heard a sound…

    “Baby?  Are you there?  Tina?”

    “I’m here, Bette.”

“What ‘s wrong?  Are you crying, T?”

    “Yeah, I am,” Tina sniffed.

“But why?  It was supposed to be funny…”

“It’s not funny.  It’s sweet.  You’ve never said anything like that to me before.  You’ve never just told me something you were feeling that you didn’t actually have to tell me,” Tina laughed gently, hoping she didn’t sound like she was admonishing Bette.

“Well, that’s not true, Tina,” Bette answered, a tiny bit hurt.

“I’m glad you miss me when we’re apart, babe.  I miss you too.”

    “I know, T.”

“I hate it, but I’ve got to get off now.  We’ve got a big scene later and there’s a lot of complicated stuff to work out since it’s going to be shot outside tonight.  I’ll check back with you later on, okay?  Try to rest.”

    “I will.”

“And Bette?  Don’t forget that Kit is either bringing you dinner or sending it over.”

    “Thanks honey.”

“You’re welcome.  Okay, I’m being summoned.  Gotta run!  I love you.  Thanks for telling me about earlier.”

Bette blushed unexpectedly.  “I love you too.”
