Lifeline – Bette and Tina
Lifeline
Chapter One
Tears streamed from Bette’s soulful brown eyes, etching damp lines in an otherwise beautiful and youthful face. Leaning forward in her seat, accelerating through the L.A. traffic, it was as though the posture itself might propel her there faster. She had disconnected from the Bluetooth and absently beat her palms against the steering wheel in frustration as countless drivers came between her and her destination. ‘I’m on my way, baby,” she whispered urgently. ‘Please, please be okay. I’m coming as fast as I can.’ Her voice quavered with emotion. She reached over to turn her flashers on, laying on the horn.
‘Fucking traffic!’ she yelled suddenly, taking a turn with too much acceleration, and fought to control the car, jumping the curb briefly. ‘Calm down,’ she told herself. ‘You can’t help her if you don’t get there in one piece.’ Just then the phone rang again. With a voice command it came to life.
“Bette? Bette, are you there?” Alice was clearly distraught. “Where the fuck are you?”
“I’m on my way. I’m coming!”
“Bette…she’s …”
“She’s WHAT?!” Bette screamed, her voice fraught with panic. She felt her stomach clench, a sweat breaking on her forehead.
“She’s in the ER. We can’t see her yet.”
“The hell we can’t!” Bette answered, flying through a yellow light.
“I think it’s bad, Bette.” Alice was clearly sobbing and she heard a muffled voice in the background calming her.
“Shut up Alice! Just shut the fuck up!” Bette yelled.
“Bette? It’s Shane.” If it was possible, her voice was even softer than usual. In times of crisis, as in normal life, Shane’s response was a dramatic contrast to Alice’s. Bette felt a pang of cold fear in hearing the tone of Shane’s voice. She was too calm. “Drive up to the main ER entrance. I’ll come out and park your car and Kit can take you to the family ER waiting room. Call me when you arrive and I’ll meet you there. And Bette?”
“Yeah?” She deftly threaded her way between the lanes of traffic, pressing the gas harder, totally focused on her objective.
“Hurry…”
“Five minutes, Shane. I’ll be five minutes!” The line went dead. Bette sobbed, her shoulders shaking, and she floored it as she saw Cedars Sinai looming in front of her. “Please, baby…know that I’m coming!”
