    Lest I Forget (11)

I took that in. It made sense, and I knew he’d tried to explain it to me before. Still, I was having a hard time wrapping my head around the news. “But…if you can get her into physical therapy soon, can’t she relearn all those things?”

“I’m afraid that’s not as easy as it sounds. Aside from the fact that the area of her brain that controls much of her movement has basically been wiped clean, it was damaged to the point where her control of her movements will never be what it was, no matter how much therapy she ends up doing,” he said gently.

“But…she was signing yesterday. I mean, if the slate was wiped clean, how was she able to do that?”

“The slate was only wiped clean in certain areas. She’ll be able to remember some things, and able to force herself to do other things. But compared to other people, she’s going to be limited. She’s very lucky that she’s able to control her hands enough to do even basic sign language, and seeing as she can do that, we can build on it.”

I didn’t reply, at least not verbally. What he was saying was just too sad to really say anything to, although I knew I should be grateful that Alice could do as much as she could. Three days ago I’d thought she was going to die, and now I had been told that she was going to live. Still, I couldn’t help but wonder if she’d even want to, since to all intents and purposes she’d be almost fully dependent. Alice had always loathed seeming dependent on anyone, and it made me incredibly sad to know that she was probably going to be the rest of her life.

That was all there really was to say. Dr. Hernandez asked if I was doing all right, and if there was anything I needed. I told him I was fine, and I really was. Still, even if I hadn’t been, I wouldn’t have said anything. The man had a really difficult job and I wouldn’t have burdened him with my trivial complaints. That, and I wanted him to focus on Alice, not on me. That might sound crazy, but she was at the forefront of my mind, and so was her care. I’d have simply curled up in a chair beside her bed and waited until she came out of this if it had been up to me.

    1. Another excellent chapter, MT! This is really such a moving story. It’s funny — I can empathize with Dana. When the story started, I expected Alice to not make it. I know I should be happy that she will, but, I am still sad that she will lose her ability to talk. And, yes, I know they are not real people. You just write them so well that it is hard not to think about them as such. You are doing a great job in writing what Dana is going through. You get into an almost “institutional” mode when you are keeping vigil like this. I think her talking about their past is a good way to get away from that for at least a little bit. I’m glad Dana is thinking ahead about getting Alice some help for the depression that she might feel. I’ll be curious to see what the real deal is with Alice and the Chicago trip. Thank you so much for the update. I know it must be hard to write such an emotional story when you are feeling down. I’ll add by hugs to wondering’s and my hopes that you are feeling better.

    2. Hey, sorry to hear things are so difficult for you at the moment. The story as always was wonderful, I’m glad that Alice seems to be pulling through a little bit but the challenges ahead seem pretty enormous. The relationship you have written for this pair over their lifetime however gives me hope that they will have the strength to come through it. Sending you big hugs and hoping the sun starts to shine for you!

    3. *gives hugs* Tis is a very good chapter MT. I agree with Magoose that with your stories, you write them so well that I can’t help but sometimes feel it’s real. Your stories are all very moving, yes even the short ones *wink* I hope everything will be okay MT. Thanks for the chapter.
