Lest I Forget (11)
I finished my breakfast pretty quickly, and showered even faster, just so I could go sit by Alice again. The situation still sucked, but somehow talking to her about everything we’d experienced together felt good. Almost as if it was a validation of all the pain we were both feeling. I don’t know if that makes any sense to anyone but me; probably not. But that’s how I felt, and from the way Alice’s eyes sparkled when I talked to her about our past, I knew she felt the same.
Not that it made anything any easier. While I hadn’t seen much of Dr. Hernandez the past few days, from the comments the nurses made I knew nothing had changed with Alice’s condition. Which, when I really thought about it, was probably why I hadn’t seen him. Then again, I had a very strange concept of time since Alice had been in here, and the days seemed to stretch on for weeks. So, while I logically knew that I’d seen the man not two days ago, it felt like forever.
It didn’t matter much when it came right down to it. When I walked back into Al’s room, he was there, checking her charts and looking at the various monitors surrounding her. He didn’t notice me at first, but when he did, he smiled at me. “Good morning, Mrs. Fairbanks,” he said softly so as not to wake her up from the nap she’d fallen into. He motioned me back in the direction of my room and followed me, closing the door to Al’s room behind him.
“She’s doing about as I expected. I’m sure you’ve already noticed her staying awake for longer periods, and that’ll keep getting progressively better. I think we can get those bandages off today, too.”
“That’s good,” I replied automatically. He seemed to notice my anxiety and smiled.
“When she’s completely recovered from the coma, I’m going to suggest that she start on a pretty intense physical therapy regimen to get back as much movement as she can. I know she’s been able to control her movements a bit more, and I’d like to try to get her body moving as much as possible as soon as she’s physically able to handle it. The sooner she starts, the better the chances of her recovering most of her movements in certain areas,” the doctor explained quietly.

Another excellent chapter, MT! This is really such a moving story. It’s funny — I can empathize with Dana. When the story started, I expected Alice to not make it. I know I should be happy that she will, but, I am still sad that she will lose her ability to talk. And, yes, I know they are not real people. You just write them so well that it is hard not to think about them as such. You are doing a great job in writing what Dana is going through. You get into an almost “institutional” mode when you are keeping vigil like this. I think her talking about their past is a good way to get away from that for at least a little bit. I’m glad Dana is thinking ahead about getting Alice some help for the depression that she might feel. I’ll be curious to see what the real deal is with Alice and the Chicago trip. Thank you so much for the update. I know it must be hard to write such an emotional story when you are feeling down. I’ll add by hugs to wondering’s and my hopes that you are feeling better.
Awesome chap…ya even managed to get jenny mellowed with age
Hey, sorry to hear things are so difficult for you at the moment. The story as always was wonderful, I’m glad that Alice seems to be pulling through a little bit but the challenges ahead seem pretty enormous. The relationship you have written for this pair over their lifetime however gives me hope that they will have the strength to come through it. Sending you big hugs and hoping the sun starts to shine for you!
*gives hugs* Tis is a very good chapter MT. I agree with Magoose that with your stories, you write them so well that I can’t help but sometimes feel it’s real. Your stories are all very moving, yes even the short ones *wink* I hope everything will be okay MT. Thanks for the chapter.
Once Again Amazing!!! I love the flashabacks, so freaking adorable! I never want to get out of bed either!!!Hope you are feeling better! Put your face in the sun a little bit, it always makes me feel better!!
