Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter Fourteen
Chapter Fourteen
Later that day
Bette had put Angelica down and walked down the long hall. The walls were pure white and looked stark, yet in an odd way quite welcoming. Bette recognized much of the art on the walls and the small sculpture on the hall tables. Helena had excellent taste.
“Hey,” Bette said as she walked into the living room. Helena was seated in a leather chair sipping a fizzy water. She turned to look at Bette.
“Hi. Settled in, then?”
“I am,” Bette said as she walked across the room. Helena stood. I poured you a Perrier. She handed it to Bette. “Would you like the tour?”
“I’d love it. I’ve only seen two rooms and the hall and I’ve fallen in love with the house.”
“Come on, then.” Helena led the way, taking Bette from the living room down another hall.
“You know, this house is really reminiscent of John Lautner’s architectural design. Everything seems so natural and. . . I don’t know, organic?”
“I know what you mean. Have you ever seen the Sheats-Goldstein house in Beverly Hills.”
“Yes, exactly,” Bette said with enthusiasm. “That house is spectacular, too, with its wall-to-wall windows, open spaces. God, yes. But Helena, your house really is magnificent.” Architecture was Bette’s second favorite academic interest and pursuit. She had taken several Architectural History classes at Yale. The architectural styles she liked were different–Bette dreamed of one day living in a Lautner home, but she also liked the neo-Expressionism of Frank Israel, the industrial sensibilities of Barton Myers and the utilitarianism of Gustav Stickley and his Craftsman homes.
“I believe that the architect who worked on this home, studied with Lautner, but she also has her own style. I found it breathtaking from the moment we walked in. And then Tina told me that you called it the quintessential California beach house.”
“I did,” Bette said as the walked from the living room down the spiral staircase. “Is that why you bought it? Because you knew I coveted it?” She couldn’t refrain. There were just too many coincidences for it not to be true—whatever Bette wanted, Helena had to have.

Nice to see the family time and to know that Tina knows what she wants and understands that Bette wants it too. The legal delay may end up helping B&T as it will give Tina even more time to heal. Awaiting the next chapter, thanks.
OMG portia, you had me with the moisture comment…too tricky!!! Wow so much to love in this story…loved sharmen, all the conversations/dialogue is so instrumental in this tale, you do this so well….How can you keep this up, your amazing…THANKYOU
Congrats on your much deserved award! It amazes me at how you kept everyone storyline straight. Never a dull moment reading your post. B&T&A simple connecting is just so beautiful & heart warming. Thanks for another great post.
Congrats on the award. You so deserve it! Haha, this time, Helena would ask the right person for advice. ;) It’s so moving to see Bette and Tina sharing a tender moment. Great as always.
I’m glad Stephanie didn’t brainwash Tina into letting Bette go. Stephanie is such a lil manipulator!
Helena is turning out to be a much needed friend to Bette. I’m not totally convinced she would be against some intimate one on one time with Bette, but I guess that remains to be seen. The pool scene was beautiful. The gentleness and understanding between B & T is their best form of communication. Who needs words when a look and a touch can mean so much more ? Absolutely loved this chapter.
First, congrats on the award, it was well deserved! This was a sweet chapter for Bette and Tina. I hope to see more of that interaction. I am so loving the interaction between Helena and Bette. I can’t wait for the show down in courts against Stephanie, that should be some firrrreeee! I feel bad for Shane but she should open to Carmen. Post soon!
Lovely story between Tina and Bette. Good to see Helena and Bette as friends but…. Fearful of Helena’s disappointment with Dylan
Thank you for posting…Stephanie needs to get hit by a bus…she is not doing all of this because she loves Tina. I am glad Bette is taking a active role in Tina’s physical therapy. Helena is truly being a good friend to Bette & Tina. I hope this whole plan by Stephanie washes out soon…you have me sitting on the edge of my seat. Please post soon.
it’s amazing how you use the show but turn the things around…i hope tina’s sister will lose, and B&T will be a family again, with tina healthy…and i would like to see helena and dylan working soemthing out, their pairing was great on the show and in this chapter
Your detailed descriptions are flawless – I feel completely present in each situation – it’s splendid:)
Portia, I am really enjoying the budding friendship between Bette and Helena. Bette needs a worth adversary and it looks like Helena is going to fit the bill. Won’t Tina be pleased. And how right was Helena about Bette getting more involved with the therapies. Thank you so much for your continued effort with this brilliant story.
hey there- i’m a new reader of your story and wanted to let you know how much i’m enjoying it. very clever and certainly well written. thanks and will be looking for more.
I was just thinking about this story the other day. So glad to see you posted. Congratulations on the well deserved award. I hope Bette does not stay at Helena’s. Not good to raise suspicions right during all the legal mess. I’m glad Bette is trying harder to express her desire for Tina. In Tina’s somewhat confused mental state, she going to need all the reinforcement she can get. Enjoy your time away, BUT please don’t be gone too long. I love your story. Thanks Portia.
WOW, just WOW. The Shane&Carmen part was AMAZING, so beautiful. I loved every bit of their scenes together. Thanks so much I really enjoyed it.
I continue to be amazed at the detail in your writing and the way you weave all of these stories together. Please make Stephanie go away, far away. I think she’s psychotic.Wonderful, wonderful scene in the pool! Thank you so much!
Hey Portia, Congrats on the well-deserved award. It is a testament to your skills and talents as an author. This is essential reading on this site and I visibly cheer up when I know there is a massive chapter from your good self to read and reread and enjoy many times over. It is all the delicious detail and marvelous ministrations that you create. This narrative is truly crafted and perfectly conveys the thoughts and souls as well as actions of each of the individuals. You really are developing an alternate universe where love and support are the foremost emotions as opposed to the TV version where hurt and complete character changes were the order of the day. I jump up and down with joy every time I see a new post from you as I know that there is a pleasurable read in store for me. I do feel like Christmas has come and I have another mysterious present to open. I was excited that Bette followed Helena’s advice and got involved in Tina’s recuperation as this type of encouragement is exactly what Tina needs. You masterly insert the best and enjoyable moments from the series as witnessed by Dana’s breast cancer and Dylan’s pursuit of Helena. AWESOME! Thank you so much for this enchantment. Your Loyal Fan PS – Am waiting for your next post as always.
Portia…First off, congrtas on the award. Obviously greatly deserved. When I first saw that your post was 19 pages, I said to myself,”Oy to the Vey.” But the pages just flew by b/c your writing is so extraordinary.Your detailed writing is magnificent.
The other readers are right about the word, “detail”. This story is so detailed and rich and fully realized, it truly is another version of S3, entirely your own and entirely wonderful. All the characters get their due. The pool scenes between Bette and Tina make good on the promise that their S1 love held. Thank you for reuniting the family. I’m living in your world, Portia. I like it here. Thanks!
Portia this story is great! The love and dedication Bette has for Tina is overwhelming! I can’t wait to read more chapters.
It’s my first time commenting on any of your stories and the only thing that comes to mind for me is, “in the nick of time”. Helena’s advice was timely and AMEN! Bette listened! Just that one interaction changed so much for Tina. It really is true, love isn’t what you say, it’s what you do. Now Bette has to keep on doing what she did…and I like that she included little Angy.
Your Sharmen moments are great!!Really well written!!!Good job!
