Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 26C

“That’s excellent, Helena.  It certainly is a start and I’m glad to hear it.”

“I think I need to get away for a while.  I know that you’ve already shut down my. . . I mean, the studio.  I feel quite ineffectual at this point and plan to leave immediately.”

    “Where are you going?”

“New York.  See the children and then I’ll decide.”

“Perfect.  We can fly back together this evening.”

“Now that I know that Tina’s baby is safe, I’m going to leave now.”

“Helena,” she cried.  “Wait for me.  We’ll return together.”

“Mother, I’m on my way to the airport.  Besides, I really need to be alone to do some thinking.”

“I know how you get.  You’re depressed.  You feel like I don’t love you and you’re acting out.”

“No.  I’m not asking anything of you.”

    “You will.”

“Mother, I need to be alone.”

“What will you do for money, Helena?  I don’t want you gambling again.  I don’t want to have to bail you out of some nasty, little situation, again.”

“I’ll be in touch.”  Helena hung up.

Peggy moved the phone from her ear and stared at it before shutting it off.  “Humph.”

Vogel nodded her head and said a few words to Tina and Bette before taking her leave.  Bette, Boden, who was carrying the car seat, and Tina, who carried Angelica turned and walked the few steps to Peggy.

“We can leave.  Detective Vogel wants us to go to the station to make our statement tomorrow afternoon.”

“Then let’s head back to the limo and be on our way,” Peggy smiled at them.  “You’re a fine looking family, you three are.”

They began walking toward the car, but Bette slowed and finally stopped when she reached the deaf artist who was watching them approach.

“You hah-veh your baby,” the artist said.

Bette smiled at her and then the art she was creating, obviously admiring the woman’s work.  “Excuse me.”  Bette hoped she wasn’t wrong.  Nothing would be more embarrassing than asking a deaf artist if she was the most famous, living, deaf artist in the United States and be wrong.  It would be like saying, ‘all of you look alike.’ She grinned.  “I was just wondering. . .”  She pointed at herself, then used that same index finger to make a circle beside her forehead to sign that she was wondering.  Bette lifted her eyes upward trying to recall how to say what she wanted.  Finally, she used her pinkie and pretended to draw on paper.  It was the word for ‘art’ which wasn’t exactly the word she wanted, but it was all she knew.  She said, “. . .your style is similar and the-the medium is. . .”  Bette’s hand was out in front her with her thumb and pinkie sticking out and the other three fingers curled under.  She moved her hand back and forth showing her thumb and pinkie pointing in opposite direction.  “. . .nearly identical.  Ummm, are you Jodi Lerner?”  Bette spelled Jodi’s name with her fingers.

    1. i am once again left speechless at your incredible ability to weave a tale. i actually yelped in excitement when Angie was safe but at the same time, believe it or not, felt somewhat sorry for Josh. only your writing could evoke that somewhat schizophrenic sympathy.I’m also a bit worried at the introduction of Jodi into the story but hope that after all that we’ve been through with Bette and Tina to date, she will not pose a threat to their relationship.as for all of the other characters and their stories, i am finding them entertaining and interesting as well which is not usually the case when reading as i’m pretty much just a Tina/Bette fan. this again, is testimony to your ability to ability to entertain.thanks again for the story and the time and effort that must be involved. looking forward as always to reading more.

    2. I’ve spent the past two days reading the whole thing, and honestly? It’s great. Really, really great. The characters are well written and adhere to canon, your reweaving of the events of Season 3 into this alternative version is not only really well done, but in my mind — preferable. As for the Jodi issue, if she’s like every other non-core character in your work (herself, but changed), I’ll be very happy to see where that goes. I do wonder, though, moments after Bette is reunited with Tina and her baby for the first time in weeks, she wanders off to talk to Jodi? That seems a little… I don’t know, inhuman? But, hey, if that’s my only complaint in 26 chapters, consider it an amazing feat. I’m a huge Danish fan, and I’m happy to see you keeping the love alive. Would love to see more of that relationship in your writing, but generally I think the chapters are fairly good about being even with their time. You’re prolific. Are you really spitting out this much in three days? Because if so, that’s incredible. I mean, really, really exceptional. Thanks for writing this, it’s a great read, and I can’t wait to see more of it.

    3. Thank goodness Angelica is safe. I’m glad Boden was there. Um, not too excited about Jodi showing up in this story :). Can’t wait for the celebration…hope everyone gets a little ‘private celebration’ time . You’ve really spoiled us this last week Portia. Thanks for this wonderful fic and don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Bette better mess up of jodi!! yeah for angie being okay… now it’s time for the port-kennards to get on with their lives. tina needs to finish her rehab.i wonder what else steph. did what else is she hiding??? great update!!:)

    5. Ahhhh… I can breathe now. That was tense, but Baby A is safe, finally! I’m so glad there was a third person there and Boden clocked that whining maggot Josh. Although, I think Bette would have ripped him apart eventually anyway. Hels is leaving, which is a shame, but her heart’s somewhere else… So! Ol’ Steph’s about to get her comeuppance, big time. I hope Peter gets his money back, as well as his furniture. I’m dreading the stuff coming out that was on that list of hers. Girl needs help, if she can survive prison. This was so good, I can’t wait for the next post. thanks Portia.
