Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 26C

She and Tina started across the field to the other side of the driveway.  “Josh.  You’re right and I was wrong.  Right now I’m just concerned about our baby.  We need you to give us our baby.”

“Your baby’s fine.  I wouldn’t hurt her, but. . .but. . .but I’ll tell you this, I don’t have to or need to do jackshit.  That is your whole fucking problem.  You think you can tell people what to do when you want them to do it.  I heard about how you treated Dr. McPherson, too.  How you went after him and threw him off of your girlfriend’s case.  He’s like the best doctor and you screwed him over.  That’s your thing.  You like to do that.  You love to do that.”

Bette handed Tina her phone.  “Peggy’s listening,” she whispered to Tina, then said into Tina’s phone, “Josh, is Angelica, all right?  We need to know that.  Is she all right?”

“I don’t want to talk to you.”

Bette’s voice was soft and compliant.  “I thought you did.  I want to talk with you.  Can we talk?”

“What’s the point?  You’re probably trying to figure out how to screw me over right now.”

“Bette shook her head as they moved forward.  “I’m not.  I’m really not.  We’ll get Doctor McPherson to give you your job back.  We’ll. . .”

“Screw that.  I won’t get it back.  You’re gonna. . . gonna have to pay now.  I want money.  I’ll arrange to give you your kid, but you’re going to have to pay.”

“How much?  How much do you want?”

    “I’ll call you back.”

    He hung up.

“Shit,” Bette said.  “He’s really fucking on edge.  We’ve got to make quick work of this, Tee.  Seriously.”

Tina was a little ahead of Bette.  They were already at the first cabin.  It wasn’t the one from the photo that Ju-Ju had shown them.  They kept moving.  There was quite a bit of space between the cabins—no less than 50 yards.  At each one, they checked the mailbox for a name, looked around the cabin for the Grey Camry, determined that the dwelling wasn’t the one from the photograph, and then they moved to the next.  Between the fourth and fifth cabin, there was a person standing on the grass surrounded by copper piping, metal tubing, iron plates, a generator, and a blow torch on the ground and at easy reach.  The person wore a welding mask over their face and a gray gas station attendant’s jumpsuit covering their body.

    1. i am once again left speechless at your incredible ability to weave a tale. i actually yelped in excitement when Angie was safe but at the same time, believe it or not, felt somewhat sorry for Josh. only your writing could evoke that somewhat schizophrenic sympathy.I’m also a bit worried at the introduction of Jodi into the story but hope that after all that we’ve been through with Bette and Tina to date, she will not pose a threat to their relationship.as for all of the other characters and their stories, i am finding them entertaining and interesting as well which is not usually the case when reading as i’m pretty much just a Tina/Bette fan. this again, is testimony to your ability to ability to entertain.thanks again for the story and the time and effort that must be involved. looking forward as always to reading more.

    2. I’ve spent the past two days reading the whole thing, and honestly? It’s great. Really, really great. The characters are well written and adhere to canon, your reweaving of the events of Season 3 into this alternative version is not only really well done, but in my mind — preferable. As for the Jodi issue, if she’s like every other non-core character in your work (herself, but changed), I’ll be very happy to see where that goes. I do wonder, though, moments after Bette is reunited with Tina and her baby for the first time in weeks, she wanders off to talk to Jodi? That seems a little… I don’t know, inhuman? But, hey, if that’s my only complaint in 26 chapters, consider it an amazing feat. I’m a huge Danish fan, and I’m happy to see you keeping the love alive. Would love to see more of that relationship in your writing, but generally I think the chapters are fairly good about being even with their time. You’re prolific. Are you really spitting out this much in three days? Because if so, that’s incredible. I mean, really, really exceptional. Thanks for writing this, it’s a great read, and I can’t wait to see more of it.

    3. Thank goodness Angelica is safe. I’m glad Boden was there. Um, not too excited about Jodi showing up in this story :). Can’t wait for the celebration…hope everyone gets a little ‘private celebration’ time . You’ve really spoiled us this last week Portia. Thanks for this wonderful fic and don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Bette better mess up of jodi!! yeah for angie being okay… now it’s time for the port-kennards to get on with their lives. tina needs to finish her rehab.i wonder what else steph. did what else is she hiding??? great update!!:)

    5. Ahhhh… I can breathe now. That was tense, but Baby A is safe, finally! I’m so glad there was a third person there and Boden clocked that whining maggot Josh. Although, I think Bette would have ripped him apart eventually anyway. Hels is leaving, which is a shame, but her heart’s somewhere else… So! Ol’ Steph’s about to get her comeuppance, big time. I hope Peter gets his money back, as well as his furniture. I’m dreading the stuff coming out that was on that list of hers. Girl needs help, if she can survive prison. This was so good, I can’t wait for the next post. thanks Portia.
