Just The Girl – Chapter One (a HYD-inspired fic)

She arrived at the said spot a few minutes later and threw her leather case on the bench and plopped down beside it. She took out the new novel she borrowed from the library and opened to the page where her ratty and overused bookmark was and began reading. She was so engrossed in her little literary world that she didn’t notice the four women maneuvering their way through the brick path. She was brought back to reality a few minutes later when a loud voice rang through the courtyard.

"Ow! What the fuck?!" Alice Pieszecki screamed as she tripped over a backpack that was lying on the path. It’s owner, a nerdy looking freshman with pigtails, apologized profusely to the blonde. She had put her bag down while she bended over to tie her shoelaces when F4 walked by. Tina was looking at the little commotion from two meters away and shook her head. How the hell did Alice trip over that huge backpack? It was bright pink and enormous, was Alice blind or something? She thought as she watched the said blonde look at the freshman in anger.

"Let it go Al." Shane stepped in and patted Alice on the back. "Was your fault anyway for talking your mouth away and not looking where you’re going." She laughed as she gently grabbed Alice by the shoulders and began to lead her away.

Bette, who was watching the whole thing with a frown on her face, walked over to the freshman and sneered. "You should’ve known better than to leave your fucking things lying around." She said as she kicked the backpack, causing its contents to spill out onto the brick path. "If Al had been hurt, I would’ve kicked you too." She added as she quickly turned around and followed Shane and Alice. The poor, rattled freshman cried softly as she bent down to grab her scattered things from the ground. Tina was about to stand up from the bench and help the girl when someone beat her to it. Tina watched in awe as Sam gingerly bent down and started picking up the books and notebooks on the ground. She did it with such care and gentleness that Tina couldn’t help but smile at the sight a little bit. When everything was put back into place, the flustered freshman stood up and began thanking the brunette over and over again. Sam merely looked at the girl with a bored expression on her face and walked away to follow her friends. She passed by Tina’s bench and met the blonde’s gaze for a second before a huge yawn escaped her lips.

Tina was blushing at the brief eye contact. She felt her heart beating crazy inside her chest and sighed. Yes, she hated F4.. but yes, she also had a huge, growing crush on Sam Makavejev. Was it possible to hate something with so much passion and love a part of it at the same time? Tina exhaled as she sat back down again. She looked in the direction where Sam and the other F4 members headed into and watched them walk away. As soon as Sam made it back to the group, Tina heard the distinct, reprimanding voice of Bette Porter. "Why the hell did you help that stupid girl?" She bellowed as she looked back at the freshman.

"Dunno." Sam merely shrugged and put an arm over her best friend’s shoulder, mimicking Alice and Shane. "Let’s go." She said as she lead Bette away.

Tina shook her head as she watched Bette and Sam follow Alice and Shane inside the cafeteria. As soon as they were out of her sight, Tina bent down and went back to her book. "Bette Porter’s a fucking ass." She muttered under her breath.
