    Je t’aime (part 1 of 3)

Outside the sky seemed grey but not raining, voices chattered all around and Tina glanced up and down, looking for a cab that would take her into the centre,

She stuck her head inside the nearest open window, “Gare de Lyon, s’il vous plait?”

The taxi driver merely nodded, not bothering himself to get out and help her with the case,

Tina grizzled under her breath as she got in, “Thanks then …”

    ~

In a whole other city, Bette too was growing increasingly impatient with cab drivers and their inability to follow her driving directions as she set out for an early morning meeting way across town at the Gering institute, prepared for a few days of kissing up and swallowing her defensiveness over the gun piece.

She sat in the back seat of the cab, clothed in memories of New York as they drove down Central Park East at 7.30am, a particularly bad choice. Across the park stood the Natural History Museum, where Tina dragged her to once, making her take goofy pictures of the two of them together beside dinosaurs and other fossilised antiquities. A little way back on the side they drove down, stood the Guggenheim, her favourite memory of all their New York trips, for no good reason other than they couldn’t keep their hands off each other and as they wandered around, Bette pausing every few strides to talk about a painting or display whereupon she’d look to the side and realise that the only artwork Tina was bothered by in the entire building was the side of her profile.

She shook her head, remembering that the instructions laid forth to her involved Jodi too, involved figuring out what she wanted.

She didn’t want to hurt Jodi, and she knew it seemed pathetic sometimes to say but this thing between her and Tina, this new force had suddenly sprung from nowhere, catching her off guard and a little by surprise.

As they drove downtown, she remembered following Jodi down into Greenwich and Soho, meeting with out of pocket designers, artists, penniless playwrights, people who in her twenties and even thirties she loved to call her friends. But as time went on it just became more and more clear that those people weren’t her friends anymore, and Jodi had called her a snob, which perhaps was true but she made her choices and she liked them.

    1. Well shit girl, get your ass on the concorde and head out. I would have already been out the door. And being the girl that is always prepared I know Bette has her passport with her.

    2. babe, i’ve had too much wine, i’m going to have to re-read and comment intelligently tomorrow. but i must say…love it…well, you already showed it to me and i already complimented you on it, but i think its inspired, how you keep painting these dialogues the way you do. its really like painting, how you write, everything flows together like perfectly combined colors on a canvas. ok, i’m going to shut up now, cuz i’m gushing again. but i don’t care, i’ll gush all i like. you’re a poet. hehe. ok, i’ll comment again tomorrow. but for the record: pfft on henry. lol. oh, right…intelligence..tomorrow…maybe later tonite;) xo baby, sweet dreams.

    3. Thank you so much for this lovely story. I just love the pacing of your writing and the way Tina and Bette talk with one another. Even though you show Bette’s flaws and confusion; I certainly wish she had spoken to Jodi much earlier. Still there’s such love and understanding in your portrayal of Bette.

    4. oh yeah, i liked the invisible string also. it shows up in english lit and in your writing in beautiful ways…as a concept, i think it shows how connected you are to the energy of the characters. which you know i love about your writing. i’m glad these two are taking their time, i like how you pace it. seriously, thats probably the best part for me. cool lady, more more;) when you get time of course!

    5. Hey there! “She dreamt strange dreams involving Jenny and Bette, the latter being the radical force who seemed the only one capable in her dream of shutting Jenny up, and as the train approached Lyon Tina awoke with a start, her brain filled with images of Bette as she came to Tina’s rescue once again, driving a wooden stake through Jenny’s bloodless heart.” LOL! Brilliant!

    6. Bette realizing that Jodi wasn’t the one she truly loved and that she was only herself with Tina is brilliant. It was sad that Jodi had to be the one to have the stones to break things off, but I am glad that Bette didn’t cave into saying something she didn’t mean. I hope that we get to see Bette and Tina’s reconciliation in Paris.

    7. Awwwww! This is sooo sweet and sooo cute and you’re sooo gooood! Seriously! “The invisible string which drew them together seemed ever tauter, stronger, like a pull which began to feel as if it were attached to that centre of her being again and not just to her heart, a sensation which made her sigh with pain, wanting nothing more than to abandon her trip and whisk Tina off somewhere, rediscover the romantic gestures in her heart which only came out to play when the two of them were at their best, falling head over heels in love with each other again.” => Great, poetic passage! Brava, Sofa! “I don’t think I ever really stopped loving you …” Bette answered quietly, her words like a song inside Tina’s addled mind.” => I think every die-hard TiBetter is dying to hear Bette to whisper this line to Tina in the show. After all this couple has been through, this is like every TiBetter’s secret mantra: they’ve never stopped and will never ever cease loving each other. “Bette nodded to herself, the thought of just seeing her rushing through her like an incredible force of energy, tingling her fingers down her spine to her toes, as if Tina were kissing her right there and then, warming her body through and through.” => My toes and fingers actually tingled while I was reading these lines. “You should come to France. You should come to New York. Come to Paris?” => YES! That’s what I’d call a perfect compromise. Thanks for this gem, Sofa! Can’t wait to read about their Paris tryst. PPS and Happy Hearts’ Day, btw! ;->

    8. I loooooove this story…. (Totally indpendent of the fact that you’re heading toward a reconciliation in the city of love, my favorite city, my town… PARIS! … Nothing to do wih it! ;) Anyway, this tale is amazing and can’t wait to read the next post! Thanks! (By the way, the taxi driver’s reaction about the suitcase was quite right! But they tend to get a tiny bit better…)

    9. awwweeee I get so sappy over stories like this, yes on one hand Bette was basically cheating on Jodi but to me I don’t see it that way I mean it’s Tina for crying out loud. I hope Jodi is out the picture and im so ready to see how tibette is about to shut down Cannes, yah Bette is on her way
