Imitating Georgia O’Keeffe (6)
“Nope.”
“Good, that’s good. What about the donor?”
“The donor?”
“Yes, have you and Bette picked a donor yet?”
“Uh we haven’t really thought about it yet, Dr. Wilson.”
“Oh really? Well, you have to start doing it soon if you want to get pregnant in three months. Finding the right donor is harder than you think, I’ve worked with couples who spent up to a year to find a donor. It can be very tiresome. Most of the time couples search for a donor among their friends and people they trust, but they rarely succeed at that, so they have to use sperm banks, which is both good and bad. Good because you’ll never have any kind of “that was my sperm, this is my baby” charges pressed against you, but at the same time, you don’t know the person and it might not be good.”
“I think Bette will want to look for a donor among her artist friends.”
“Tell her that she might want to hurry, then. Even if you find the donor, you’ll have to check him and his sperm first before you can use his semen to conceive there’s a lot work to do, Tina.”
As I go out of the building, all I can think of is why it has to be so hard? Why do we have to bother about donors or rather the right donor, sperm and all that? Why can’t it be so that we just spend one long night making sweet and tender love to each other and then hello, I’m pregnant?
Bette is waiting for me in her car and as I get it, she picks it up right away that I’m upset.
“What? What did Dr. Wilson tell you?”
“She opened my eyes onto how hard it actually is to get pregnant for me and you.”
“What, donors and all that stuff?”
I turn to look at her and wonder if I’m the only one who didn’t think of this. “Yeah.”
“Oh, come on, babe, we have all the time in the world for you to get pregnant. It’s not the end of the world, we’re not hurrying anywhere. I love you and you love me and we’ll have a cute and smart baby sooner or later.”
God, can this woman be any more amazing?

Guess Tina was distracted during that particular bio class. Yes, the Red Canna, please. FYI, the male couterpart to yoni is lingham (Sanskrit or Hindi). Anthropologists have been using these terms to speak in a polite and scholarly way about depictions of genetalia for decades.
