I Take All The Blame
Though she had never met her, Alice knew all about the relationship between the two step-sisters.
“Hello, my darling Alice.” Helena said as she threw her arms around her friend.
“Hey. How’s it going?”
“Um…great, actually. My mum and Melvin are getting a divorce.” They began walking.
“Wow! Way to go, mom! Does Bette know?”
“I don’t think she does, but I’m sure she’ll be ecstatic when she does find out. I know I am.”
“That means you guys can start a life together.”
“Maybe, yes. Who knows?”
“When am I going to meet her?”
“Sooner rather than later. I promise.”
“Good, because I have to see this girl for myself. She’s like a legend.”

Across Town…
Bette had on a pair of slacks and a blouse. She fastened her coat as she made her from her car to the sidewalk to the door of the Franklin Gallery. She felt good about this interview and that meant, typically, it would go well.
“I’m here to see Beverly Franklin.” Bette said to the person at the desk.
“Bette Porter, I presume.”
“Yes, that’s me.”
“Through that the door to the left, she should be waiting for you.”
“Thanks.” Bette made her way through the door to see the very beautiful, Beverly Franklin. She looked up and smiled at Bette.
“Bette Porter, right?”
“Yeah, that’s me.”
“Please, have a seat.” Bette sat, as she was told, “I was very impressed with your resume. You’re a Yale graduate with a very prestigious background. I read some of your essays.”
“I hope you found them enlightening.”
“I did. That’s why I’m going to give you the job and one up.”
“One up, ma’am?”
“Ma’am? That’s my mother, but, yes, one up. I want to give you your own show in January. And because it’s already September, I suggest you get started. By Monday, I would like a list of the artists you’re bringing to the show and the pieces you’d like to show.”
“By Monday?”
“Yes. Well, you are Peggy Peabody’s step-daughter. I’m sure you can pull a multitude of world-class artists out of a hat and have them show their work in the gallery.” Bette smiled, “And with that smile, I’m sure you can charm them at least.” Bette laughed.

Hello Ash, the pain that can be inflicted by a parent is devastating, and on top of Bette getting the best news of her young independent life she has to deal with Melvin. For her she still has so many issues to deal with, once Helena finds out what happened she is going to see Red; she will also feel guilty that she wasn’t there to protect the woman that she loves. Your details bring out the intensity of this situation, I have been on the ledge, felt those pressures, I’m just luck enough to have pulled back before I went down a path that might have left me even more alone. You are rocking this out, Luv it, Sincerely, JC
I DON’T THINK BETTE WOULD EVER CUT HER WRISTS LIKE THAT. SHE MIGHT DRINK HERSELF INTO OBLIVION BUT SHE’S NOT A CUTTER. JMO.
I’ve seen some evil people in my life, but Melvin is a work of art…bad art! This is a great story with real life behavior for some. Life isn’t always pretty, but with the support of those you love and who love you, there’s always a chance for happiness.
Ash. Did I feel her pain. I felt every cut. Well written. Melvin’s nick name must be DICK.As far as Bette cutting. Your story you tell it. Hopefully our girls will begin to rely on each other for strength because they need somebody but unfortunately they are both pretty dysfunctional.
Ash I could feel Helena’s happiness but at the sametime I could feel Bette’s pain and Helena could feel that there was something not right. Melvin is a jerk!!!
Omg I hate that blood-letting stuff…slit Melvin’s throat plz…get these girls 2gether Ash. PPS
wow, ash, you never fail to make a reader feel your words. well done, as always. how young are they in this story again? if they’re as young as i think they are, it makes perfect sense that their whole world is based on what their parents tell them it looks like. helena’s parentage teaches her that the world is wide open and free, bette’s teaches her quite the opposite. another brilliant observation from the show itself, on your part, i might add. pps and i’m off to read your others now!
So I was thrilled….at first. Peggy laid down the law w/ Melvin and Helena and Bette were going to be able to be together. But then Melvin had to come along and completely destroy his daughter. What a prick! Way to take repsonsibility Melvin. So this is getting even more complicated. What happens w/ the girls when Melvin and Peggy get divorced? I mean who gets custody? Hopefully not Melvin b/c if so I’m sure he’ll do everything in his power to poisin them both against Peggy, Helena and Bette. And Bette was having such a great day with getting the new job and all and then Melvin had to come and destry that as well. i sure hope Helena can help Bette get over harmful behavior. PPS!
yikes…i felt it too…PPS
I hope Peggy finds out about Melvin’s role in Bette’s cutting. Then he’ll have more than a divorce to worry about.
MELVIN IS A BIG JERK
