    I Take All The Blame

Helena awoke to the sound of “Dora the Explorer” playing loudly from the front room.  She heard the giggles of her sisters and heard Bette shushing them.  She stood up and realized she was naked.  She scrambled for the clothes she wore the night before and slid into them.  They fit like twice-worn clothing—loose and uncomfortable.  She ran her fingers briefly through her hair and walked out of Bette’s room.

”Swiper, no swiping!  Say it with us!  Swiper, no swiping!” Dora said from the television.

Ava, Constance, and Bette said it together, “Swiper, no swiping!”

“Good morning.” Bette said softly from the sofa as she started eating some Apple Jacks, “Sleep well?”

“Yes.  I slept peacefully.”  Helena winked at Bette.  She really meant that she was happy to sleep in her arms.

    “Yeah, I slept well too.”

Helena poured herself a bowl of cereal and fit in between Ava and Bette, “What are you doing today?”

“I have a meeting with a gallery.  I’m trying to become an assistant director.”

    “Sounds nice.”

“Yeah, it should be.  What are you doing?”

“Meeting my friend Alice.  We’re going to look at some rugs or something for her apartment.  I’m going to drop these two off first and then head out.”

Together, they bathed Ava and Constance.  Separately, but only for appearances, they bathed themselves.  Bette kissed Helena’s cheek at the door, resisting the urge to ask Helena to spend her life with her and move into her place.

Smiling, Helena drove to the scene of last night’s knock out drag out argument between Peggy and Melvin.  She couldn’t call it home anymore, she realized.  She opened the door of the house, allowing her sisters to go in before her.  Their nannies were waiting.

“Ms. Peabody is upstairs.” One of them announced.

    “And Melvin?”

“He left last night.  No one has seen him since.”

    “Thanks.”

Helena walked up to her mother’s door.  She could hear her humming a tune.  It sounded like “Somewhere over the Rainbow”, but she couldn’t be sure.  The closer she got to the door, the more nervous she became.  She didn’t know where her mother stood.  It was always hard to tell where Peggy stood on any issue.  Helena didn’t think Peggy even knew sometimes.  She knocked on the door.

    1. Hello Ash, the pain that can be inflicted by a parent is devastating, and on top of Bette getting the best news of her young independent life she has to deal with Melvin. For her she still has so many issues to deal with, once Helena finds out what happened she is going to see Red; she will also feel guilty that she wasn’t there to protect the woman that she loves. Your details bring out the intensity of this situation, I have been on the ledge, felt those pressures, I’m just luck enough to have pulled back before I went down a path that might have left me even more alone. You are rocking this out, Luv it, Sincerely, JC

    2. I’ve seen some evil people in my life, but Melvin is a work of art…bad art! This is a great story with real life behavior for some. Life isn’t always pretty, but with the support of those you love and who love you, there’s always a chance for happiness.

    3. Ash. Did I feel her pain. I felt every cut. Well written. Melvin’s nick name must be DICK.As far as Bette cutting. Your story you tell it. Hopefully our girls will begin to rely on each other for strength because they need somebody but unfortunately they are both pretty dysfunctional.

    4. Ash I could feel Helena’s happiness but at the sametime I could feel Bette’s pain and Helena could feel that there was something not right. Melvin is a jerk!!!

    5. wow, ash, you never fail to make a reader feel your words. well done, as always. how young are they in this story again? if they’re as young as i think they are, it makes perfect sense that their whole world is based on what their parents tell them it looks like. helena’s parentage teaches her that the world is wide open and free, bette’s teaches her quite the opposite. another brilliant observation from the show itself, on your part, i might add. pps and i’m off to read your others now!

    6. So I was thrilled….at first. Peggy laid down the law w/ Melvin and Helena and Bette were going to be able to be together. But then Melvin had to come along and completely destroy his daughter. What a prick! Way to take repsonsibility Melvin. So this is getting even more complicated. What happens w/ the girls when Melvin and Peggy get divorced? I mean who gets custody? Hopefully not Melvin b/c if so I’m sure he’ll do everything in his power to poisin them both against Peggy, Helena and Bette. And Bette was having such a great day with getting the new job and all and then Melvin had to come and destry that as well. i sure hope Helena can help Bette get over harmful behavior. PPS!
