    I Need You Here -12

    "Why didn’t you leave?"

Tina looked up from her cosmopolitan, and saw Bette looking intently at her.

They’d been sharing anecdotes and updating each other on their lives, carefully maneuvering through the minefield that was their relationship, ignoring obvious questions like each other’s lovelives, and just generally enjoying each other’s company. Right now, though, Bette seemed to have had enough of that conversation.

    "Why–?" Tina repeated, stalling.

"How come you showed up at home last night?" Bette asked. "I mean, after what I–"

"I lost a bet." Tina said flatly.

"Oh." Bette deflated at that. Okay, so it wasn’t their unspoken connection, Tina’s undying love, her heart crying out for…

"What maudlin metaphor are you thinking?" Tina asked warily.

    "I was not–"

"You’ve had your fair share of alcohol. Trust me, you’re thinking maudlin metaphors." Tina pointed out.

Bette sighed. "I thought your return would be a little more poetic than you losing a bet."

"Well, if you must know…" Tina’s attention was drawn to something outside the oceanside bar.

Bette turned, and followed Tina’s line of sight. Seeing nothing, she turned back to Tina. "What are we looking at?"

"I miss the beach." Tina said softly, gazing out into the ocean. "It’s such an obvious escape, and I don’t have that anymore."

Bette watched her. "I proposed to you on a beach."

"I married you on a beach." Tina replied, before turning back to her drink. "Sometimes I think you were better off if you never met me."

    "T, don’t say that."

"I know, it’s stupid. But we both overhauled our lives to be together." Tina looked everywhere else but at Bette.

"Is this the part where we confess our sins and we talk about getting back together?" Bette asked, wanting to make sure before she put her foot in her mouth.

"This is the part where we talk about us, without the history, without the past, without the present, or the future." Tina clarified. "Just us, Bette. You and me."

"That’s all I ever really needed." Bette said gently.

    "Me too." Tina agreed.

But they both knew they were lying. They both recognized the obvious retort, the argument that they were inviting.

They turned back to their drinks.

    1. Very nice. Glad Tina’s taking Bette’s shit, as well as giving back what she’s getting. Now, if only Bette can find Bette, there might be a chance.

    2. i’m glad tina’s able to put up with bette…she’s a very loyal wife…i’m glad they’re on their way to reconcile…thanks for the quick update, can’t wait for another one.

    3. Good chapter. I’m glad that Tina come back and try to work thing out with Bette, hope they will go thruogh with it. What a beautiful song, love it. Post soon, thanks!

    4. Good for Tina managing to get thru all this shit. Bette has an excuse her dad died she doesn’t know where she stands with Tina but wants her desparately. But being Tina here is not easy. Great writing looking forward to more.

    5. Hey Tiff,
I am liking this assertive Tina. She really has got her professional life sorted. And now trying to solve and move on from all the personal ones.
I do like your writing styles. The characters are remaining true to themselves while being influenced by those they trust.
Now Bette just needs to realise that Tina is there for her; now and always. Then maybe, she can accept what has happened, get some closure and then move forward.
Much anticipation in to how this story will progress.
      Please post soon.
      A Fan.

    6. hmm..at least when bette drinks she’s with Tina. kept her under control. great choice of song.Keep this going..am really enjoyin readin it.

    7. I love the use of the words in the song to convey Tina’s thoughts and feelings. I too enjoy using music as a means of expression for my feelings….I’m definitely no songfic hater. Keep up the good work. I’d love to see you put some stress on the situation, like making Tina have to leave or something. Anything that will make them step up and settle their issues and stop ‘pussy footing’ around them.
