I Need My Best Friend – Part 16

‘I had to be in there somewhere Bette.  If I made you feel safe, happy, content, loved why would you have to look elsewhere?’

‘I just needed to not be me for a while, I put so much stock in being everything for you that I couldn’t allow myself any room for what I thought, at the time, you would see as weakness.  How could you rely on me to support you and our family if I was weak?  I’m an intelligent, well-educated woman and I actually believed that.  I hope I’ve learned to avoid that vicious cycle in the future.  I seem to be doing most of the talking.  Feel free to jump right in.’

‘It’s comforting to know you’ve given this so much thought.  There was a time you would have just insisted things be back to normal and think we were fixed.  You’ve really changed, I’m very proud of you for giving therapy a chance.’

‘I was drowning T, I didn’t know what else to do.’

‘How about a little break?  Are you hungry?’

    * * * * *

    ‘Did you have enough Bette?’

‘Everything was great.  I need a nap now!’

    ‘You want to go back?’

‘No, we still have the best part of the day left.’

‘You could take a nap here.’

‘Or we could talk some more.  I feel like there’s something you’re holding back.’

    ‘You’re relentless.’

    ‘I’m sorry T.’

‘No, it’s all right.  Well, I’m afraid of losing myself again.’

    ‘What do you mean?’

‘When we first met I think it was exciting, challenging even, for you to have someone that you viewed as your equal.  My job was somewhat equal to yours; we shared that rush from the stress and power of our positions.  As time went on I think it became more of an annoyance that I wasn’t always available when you wanted me to be.  Things seemed to shift a little between us.  You didn’t seem to give much thought to working late and leaving me waiting for you, but you hated it when you were home and I was working or traveling.  And then, when I quit work to start our family I feel like your life just swallowed me up.  It happened so gradually I feel like I just woke up one morning and I was invisible to you.’

    1. Bette, a defeatist? Well, I guess everyone has their breaking point. I just hope she doesn’t do anything rash or premature ’cause my heart is still waiting for Tina’s fears to dissipate enough for her to realize that she and Bette deserve a second chance. Thanks for the update. I hope you feel better soon.

    2. Wow this really good, and amazing story, Bette and Tina hava a difficult time to figure out how they have to make their relationship back to normal and how important of their life. I hope they work it out as well. Please write more. Love it. “I hope you get better soon”. Good to see you writing back again, thank you.!

    3. I miss you and your stories! welcome back! I love your stories because you didn’t make it overtly melodramatic. Your take on Bette is really good and even on Tina’s. I hope you feel better soon.. We’ll just see how it plays out hmm..?

    4. I don’t see Bette as a defeatist here (no offense seven) I think she just loves Tina so much that she is respecting her (possible) choice…Bette committed the ultimate marital sin and to ask Tina to recommit and trust again could be impossible…I really love how you have kept this so realistic, my opinion anyway…these guys do love each other but sometimes love isn’t enough…on that note I really do hope they work it out and get back together but thanks for keeping it real…nice tribute to sea! Bravo!!!

    5. This was a beautiful chapter…the emotions, the processing, the dialogue…all very real. I’ve said it before, I love this story. Your writing style is so easy to read.
Oh, and thanks for the mention of my story…but let’s not make your Bette and Tina wait 15 years before they can be together again!! Please!! :)

    6. Missed your story tremendously, you do such an amazing job writing it. I will be sad when it’s completed…surely hope B&T lovers like myself, will be happy with the ending.

    7. my god, they’re a torturous pair; kit’s right…let it play itself out bette don’t precipitate a premature end…brilliant writing.
