I Need My Best Friend – Part 16
‘Did you reach Kit?’
‘She said to come over when we got back tomorrow.’
‘Good, Kit’s easy to talk to. I drew a bath for you, why don’t you go ahead before it gets cold.’
‘Thanks, that was very thoughtful.’
As soon as Tina was gone Bette picked up her phone and called Kit.
‘Hello.’
‘Kit, it’s me. Thanks for seeing Tina tomorrow, she’s having a rough time.’
‘You know I love that girl almost as much as you do. Are you all right?’
‘Fine, thanks, although I’m not sure how much I deserve your concern, I’ve made such a mess of things.’
‘You’re trying to make things right, let up on yourself.’
‘I need a favor.’
‘I’m not going to break Tina’s confidence.’
‘I wouldn’t want you to. I don’t think Tina’s going to take me back, but I don’t think she knows how to tell me. If that’s the impression you get tomorrow I want you to call me so I can make this easier for her.’
‘What are you going to do?’
‘I’m not sure. I just think I owe her that much.’
‘If she is leaving you then you owe it to her to let her walk away, don’t make her look like she spent her time trying to work through this with you and then you reject her.’
‘I just can’t stand to see her like this, knowing I’m the one responsible.’
‘Don’t try to control this Bette; you have to let it play out, no matter how difficult. You’ve worked hard on your control issues, don’t backslide now.’
‘You’re right, she deserves the satisfaction of leaving me after what I did.’
‘You’ve both made mistakes, you just made yours in a big way, as usual.’
‘Thanks a lot! I’ll talk to you later, thanks again.’
‘Drive safe tomorrow.’
In a few minutes she heard Tina call out to her. She walked back to the bedroom door and noticed the door to the bath was open. Making sure she stayed out of view she answered.
‘What is it T?’
‘Who were you talking to? I could hear talking.’
‘I called Kit to thank her for being there for us. Can I get you anything? More wine?’
‘I think I’ll wait. Maybe we could have a glass on the deck and watch the sunset, if you want to.’
‘Sounds wonderful.’
‘I’ll be out in a minute, why don’t you get a blanket and the wine, I’ll meet you out there.’
They sat together wrapped in the blanket, watching the sunset, drinking their wine and enjoying the warmth of being so close. Each lost in their thoughts. Tina wondering how she would ever make Bette understand how she felt and Bette hoping for enough strength to get through the next 24 hours, she just had to be strong a little longer, strong enough to help Tina leave her.

Wow that was amazing. Sorry you weren’t feeling well. Glad to see you are feeling better.
Bette, a defeatist? Well, I guess everyone has their breaking point. I just hope she doesn’t do anything rash or premature ’cause my heart is still waiting for Tina’s fears to dissipate enough for her to realize that she and Bette deserve a second chance. Thanks for the update. I hope you feel better soon.
Get well soon. Tina needs to realize she does deserve Bette and let them both have a second chance.
Wow this really good, and amazing story, Bette and Tina hava a difficult time to figure out how they have to make their relationship back to normal and how important of their life. I hope they work it out as well. Please write more. Love it. “I hope you get better soon”. Good to see you writing back again, thank you.!
That conversation was very real.. true to life. My heart is broken at the thought of Bette leaving..
I miss you and your stories! welcome back! I love your stories because you didn’t make it overtly melodramatic. Your take on Bette is really good and even on Tina’s. I hope you feel better soon.. We’ll just see how it plays out hmm..?
So glad to have you back–wonderful chapter.
I don’t see Bette as a defeatist here (no offense seven) I think she just loves Tina so much that she is respecting her (possible) choice…Bette committed the ultimate marital sin and to ask Tina to recommit and trust again could be impossible…I really love how you have kept this so realistic, my opinion anyway…these guys do love each other but sometimes love isn’t enough…on that note I really do hope they work it out and get back together but thanks for keeping it real…nice tribute to sea! Bravo!!!
I’ve been missing this like crazy. Good to see you back. Well done!
I could read what you write all day, hoping love will keep these two together.
This was a beautiful chapter…the emotions, the processing, the dialogue…all very real. I’ve said it before, I love this story. Your writing style is so easy to read.
Oh, and thanks for the mention of my story…but let’s not make your Bette and Tina wait 15 years before they can be together again!! Please!! :)
Missed your story tremendously, you do such an amazing job writing it. I will be sad when it’s completed…surely hope B&T lovers like myself, will be happy with the ending.
my god, they’re a torturous pair; kit’s right…let it play itself out bette don’t precipitate a premature end…brilliant writing.
