    I’d rather leave you than be the cause of your pain

     

    The feeling that usually brought a smile to Bette’s face and a jolt to her heart was now just a sad reminder of what she was about to lose. It caused Bette to frown and the tears to come once again.

     

    Bette unable to be this close in proximity to Tina and not be able to hold her finally broke the silence

     

    Bette: Stop. Please, don’t make this harder than what it has to beI absolutely can not be with you.

     

    Each word hit Tina like a ton of bricks but she ignored it determined to get through to her girlfriend. Bette heard Tina sigh, but instead of letting go she gripped her tighter.

     

    Tina laid her forehead against Bette’s back and kissed her softly. Sending yet another chill up and down Bette’s body.

     

    Bette stiffened at the feeling-wanting Tina to do it again but her stubbornness got the best of her. She removed Tina’s hands from around her waist and stepped away from her embrace.

     

    Tina stood there almost lifeless, unconsciously resting her hands on her stomach. Bette noticed the gesture and her mouth opened to say something but couldn’t form any words once again.

     

    They both stood in silence unable to look at each other. Unable to convey what they were thinking and feeling. Finally after a few more moments of that awkward silence Tina broke the tension.

     

    Tina: I thought you were in love with meI thought you cared for me

     

    Bette stared at Tinaconfusedunsure of what to say

     

    Bette: I love you and always willI care for you more than I care for myself

     

    Tina: Then why are you hurting me?

     

    Bette thought hardtrying to come up with an accurate way to respond, Tina stared intently at Bette. Almost wanting to smile at the way she looked so confused, but thought better than to because her stomach was doing all sorts of flipsand she felt that a smile would be fake at the moment.

     

    Bette: If I stay with youand Eric’s family

     

    While saying this she choked out her words and pointed to Tina’s stomach

     

    Bette: I feel in my heart that the ever looming presence of Eric, and other outside influences will put such stress on our relationship that I will not only wind up hurting youbut your child.

    30. Okay, I can see it’s going to take a while for our girls to get to a place where they will be civil with each other. I definately understand where Tina’s coming from. I was hoping Bette would be stronger, but being in love, is so new to her, that she just doesn’t know how to react. I’m counting on some kind of reconciliation somewhere, a few chapters from now. Are you going to hold out on us, for awhile, again?! Hope not!
