“This is your last warning, Jenny,” Tina Kennard said in a voice that made her subordinate shift uncomfortable in her chair. “To say the client was upset was putting it mildly. He said you hadn’t even mentioned the country-music special to him. He would have bought as many commercial spots in that hour and- a-half program as we would let him.”

Jenny squirmed uneasily and averted her eyes from Tina’s steady gaze. She cleared her throat nervously. “I didn’t think___”

“That’s precisely my point”, Tina said, “You haven’t been thinking, this is the third time I’ve had to reprimand you in as many weeks. Every time you pull one of these incompetent stunts, you cost the tv station plenty of money.”Tina rose from her chair and went around the corner of the desk, propping her hip against the corner and crossing her slender ankles. “More than that ,when you foul up it makes me look bad. I have to report to the station manager that we aren’t on budget and then Helena chews me out. Do you get my drift,Jenny?”

    “Uh,yes.”

“What’s the problem?”, Tina fired at her .

Her sharp tone wasn’t that of of a concerned parent or a sympathetic teacher, but more closely resembled that of a drilled sergeant who really didn’t care what the problem was,but only wanted it rectified.

Jenny looked at her with a hopeful expression.

“Well, i’ve been having trouble with this girl. She___”

“Spare me the details Jenny”, Tina cut in briskly. “I don’t care who your current love interest is. I don’t care about the current status of your personal life except as it relates to your work. I’ll review your sales report at the end of the this week. There had better be a vast improvement”

    “Okay”, Jenny muttered.

Tina circled her desk and sat down again. “Now , if you’ll excuse me, I have some other things to do.”

Taking her cue, Jenny left the office with the relief of a man being granted a stay of execution.

Rather than feeling satisfied with the scene she had just played so well, Tina sighed wearily and slumped back in her high-backed leather chair. A well-manicured hand reached up to sweep back a wayward strand of blond hair. She hated having to play the heavy in situations like this one,but it was often required of her. -Standing she walked to the wide window and opened the wide blinds. The skyline of L A came into focus but she hardly saw it. Like all the sales people under her supervision, she cared about Jenny, her happiness with her work and her general well-being.

    1. I dont know if I should laugh or cry. Bette is so sure of hersekf, and so in love with Tina. With Bette,Tina is like a bowl of Jello. She is married and to Henry yet she can’t forget Bette. Poor Tina. No children I hope. You have a winner her.Lets read more soon

    2. Definitely an interesting start. I’m curious about the past history between Tina and Bette since it seems different than what we know from the show. It must have been quite intense to make Tina react so deeply about seeing Bette. Nice writing style, very elegant. I’d like to read more of this story, a lot more.

    3. So much fear in Tina…it’s heartbreaking to see someone go through that kind of pain, the pain of denial, fear of acceptance, not wanting to hurt Henry who she loves. Bette’s confidence was bordering on arrogance. This was a great start…looking forward to the next chapter! Thanks!
